Evidently, many people blame the advent of streaming services for changing the industry at its core. But in reality, the changes began with the rise of social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, which spawned a host of new celebrities and encouraged other stars to post photos, create stories, and share their private lives.

And while being a celebrity has always been at odds with maintaining privacy, this virtual standoff has never been more apparent. So much so that some of Hollywood's biggest stars are beginning to question whether they belong in the industry at all.

Angelina Jolie Condemns Contemporary Hollywood

The ultimate star of the 2000s, Angelina Jolie is arguably one of the most influential actresses of all time. Beloved for her performances in the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Maleficent franchises, as well as Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Salt, she has had a fascinating career spanning decades and dozens of prominent films. In addition, Jolie has enjoyed the title of the sexiest woman in the world, bestowed upon her by various popular publications, including Vogue and Esquire.

With that in mind, it's fair to say that any project starring Angelina Jolie is, by its very nature, a smash hit. But apparently, the actress would think twice before pursuing a career in the film industry today.

'I wouldn't be an actress today,' Angelina Jolie revealed in a recent interview, stating that she would rather do theater instead.

Hostile Environment

According to the actress, growing up in a family of actors, she was inoculated against the glamour of Hollywood and was 'never very impressed with it' nor did she consider it 'significant or important.' But what concerns her most about the industry today is the need for actors to be constantly in the public eye, to sacrifice their privacy for success.

'When I was starting out, it wasn't as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much,' Jolie said.

More importantly, the A-lister believes that Hollywood is superficial and a lot is done to keep up appearances. As a result, a person cannot help but feel sick there.

'I grew up in quite a shallow place. Of all the places in the world, Hollywood is not a healthy place. So you seek authenticity [in other places],' the actress added, expressing her desire to move to her home in Cambodia.
