The Daphne Bridgerton actress is bittersweet about the changes in Hollywood.

Summary

  • Older women have historically been undervalued in Hollywood, but things have changed in recent years.
  • Phoebe Dynevor believes that you actresses are now in low demand.
  • The actress rose to fame thanks to her iconic role in Bridgerton.

For decades after its founding, Hollywood remained a male-dominated space where women were often treated as commodities valued for their looks. It was all too common for an actress to be considered human waste once she reached old age, to be discarded and forgotten. For this reason, many actresses resorted to plastic surgery to maintain a somewhat youthful appearance. Fortunately, much progress has been made since then.

Currently, Hollywood seems to have embraced the graceful aging approach, where actresses are valued for their talent and wrinkles are seen as a feature, not a flaw. Take, for example, Netflix's hit comedy-drama Grace and Frankie, starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, or many other notable films and shows that portray mature women. After all, their stories are considered important enough to be told. But it seems the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction.

Bridgerton's Star Phoebe Dynevor Thinks Young Actresses Are Undervalued

'I have read some great scripts recently. And yeah, I probably shouldn't be saying this, but there is still, like, not that many parts going. There is such a space for male actors… There are so many of them. And they're all great. They're all very talented young men, and they do not stop working, and good for them,' Phoebe Dynevor said in a recent interview.

According to her, it's not just the gender imbalance in the availability of roles that prevents young actresses from getting cast – there's a subtle reverse ageism that now favors more mature women. Sure, Dynevor thinks it's a good thing that older actresses are now getting more attention, but it shouldn't come at the expense of younger performers.

'But you know, when I think about the girls my age… There's way more room for them and there is still not enough room for us. It's a really good time for older women which is amazing and there's a lot for these young men, but not a lot for the actresses that I know in my age bracket,' the actress commented on the lack of roles for young actresses today.

Phoebe Dynevor's Star

Phoebe Dynevor has had a fascinating career over the years, but her most famous role is undoubtedly Daphne Bridgerton in the Netflix show of the same name. The lead role in the first season of the fan-favorite romance period drama from Shondaland helped the actress make a name for herself.

To this day, Bridgerton's Season 1 remains the most popular installment of the show, full of breathtaking twists and thrilling, steamy sex scenes. Since Season 2 didn't feature much of Phoebe Dynevor's character and wasn't as popular, Bridgerton's initial success can be attributed to the actress' performance.

Season 3 of Bridgerton is scheduled to premiere on May 16.
