Grey’s Anatomy is scrubbing in new blood: two doctors join Season 22 as Trevor Jackson’s Dr. Wes Bryant gets promoted to series regular after a major cast exit.

If you felt a tremor under Grey Sloan, you were not imagining it. Grey's Anatomy kicked off Season 22 with a brutal exit and is immediately shuffling the deck: one major promotion, two fresh faces, and the kind of messy intern drama this show lives on.

Trevor Jackson gets the bump to series regular

Trevor Jackson, who popped up last season as Dr. Wes Bryant, is now a full-time fixture in Season 22. Jackson (yep, from Grown-ish) returns as Wes, a brand-new medical intern who just moved to Seattle. The guy is sharp, good-looking, and carrying a noticeable chip on his shoulder, which is exactly the recipe for hallway clashes at Grey Sloan.

If you need a refresher: Wes first appeared in Season 21 as a bar hookup for Alexis Floyd's Simone. She was ready to chalk it up to a one-and-done, until the season finale pulled the classic Grey Sloan move and revealed he had joined the hospital as an intern. Now that he is sticking around as a series regular, that very casual fling is not going to stay casual for long.

Two new docs join in recurring roles

Season 22 is also adding a pair of recurring characters:

  • Trevor Jackson is now series regular as Dr. Wes Bryant, a new intern who relocated to Seattle; first appeared in Season 21 and crossed paths with Simone after a bar meet-cute gone sideways.
  • Jade Pettyjohn recurs as Dani, another new intern who is very eager to make her mark; she already shows up in the Season 22 premiere.
  • Anita Kalathara recurs as Dr. Kavita, a standout plastic surgeon who keeps things simple and professional; she arrives in Episode 3.
  • On the flip side, Natalie Morales is out. Her character, Dr. Monica Beltran, dies in Season 22 Episode 1, making the departure permanent.

About that opening shock

The premiere does not ease you in: Dr. Monica Beltran's death is the first big swing of the season, and with Natalie Morales exiting, the show quickly pivots to rebuild the bench. That is where Jackson's promotion and the new recurring docs come in. It is a lot at once, but for Grey's, the mix of grief, romance fallout, and fresh interns is very on brand.
