The setup
Gintama: Mr. Ginpachi's Zany Class is a TV anime based on Tomohito Osaki's light novel, set in a school where Gintoki Sakata is the teacher and the usual suspects are his unruly students. It started airing on October 7, 2025, with Bandai Namco Pictures on animation. It is not a direct continuation of the main series — it is very much its own thing — and it is streaming on Crunchyroll.
Episode 1: Gintoki roasts the spinoff (and calls it Gintama GT)
The premiere opens with a long, knowingly meta monologue about why this show exists at all. Gintoki reminds everyone that the light novel traces back to a few appendix pages from the original Gintama more than 20 years ago. He jokes that, to the hardcore purists, this is not even real Gintama — more like a bootleg — and says he warned the staff not to go through with a spinoff after the main anime wrapped up cleanly. Then he drops the punchline by dubbing the show 'Gintama GT' and the episode immediately swerves into a full-blown Dragon Ball parody.

Why the GT jab lands
The joke is a very pointed wink at the long-running conversation around Dragon Ball GT — namely, that Akira Toriyama did not plan to keep Dragon Ball going, Toei Animation pushed forward anyway, and GT ended up seen by a lot of fans as a franchise-milking detour. That is exactly the kind of industry in-joke Gintama lives for, and yes, they bring it up within minutes of this spinoff starting.
