Ciri takes the helm in CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 4, ushering in a bold new chapter for the saga.

Geralt is finally letting someone else drive. After nearly twenty years of Doug Cockle growling his way through The Witcher games (plus an animated movie), The Witcher 4 is handing the keys to Ciri. And Cockle? He could not be more chill about it.

Ciri moves up, Geralt shifts to support

CD Projekt Red is steering the new game around Ciri, the beloved 'child of surprise' in Witcher lore. Geralt is still in the mix, but this time he is not the focus. Cockle has already confirmed he is back as Geralt, and you can even hear him in the fourquel’s debut trailer. He has also said before that Geralt’s role will be smaller than usual, which lines up with the studio pivoting to Ciri as the lead.

Meet the new Ciri voice: Ciara Berkeley

Ciri is getting a new voice actor in Ciara Berkeley, and Cockle sounds fully on board. At the 2025 Golden Joystick Awards, he told me he had just met her in person that day after they traded DMs a couple of weeks ago to say hello. His read: she is lovely, has real presence in person, and does not need any hand-holding. He has offered to chat if she wants, but otherwise he is not about to give unsolicited advice. Translation: he thinks she has it handled.

No spoilers, thanks

Asked about keeping Witcher 4 secrets under wraps, Cockle went full media ninja.

'I have no idea what you are talking about.'

Meanwhile, behind the scenes at CDPR

Separate but related: CD Projekt Red just hired the lead gameplay designer from Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 — the person behind one of that action RPG’s standout elements. Smart pickup if you want to sharpen combat and systems for a Ciri-led adventure.

What we know right now

  • Doug Cockle has voiced Geralt across all three main Witcher games and an animated film, and he is back for The Witcher 4.
  • Ciri takes center stage in the new game; Geralt returns in a supporting role.
  • Ciara Berkeley is the new voice of Ciri; Cockle met her at the 2025 Golden Joystick Awards after DMing a couple weeks prior and says she will do great.
  • You can already hear Geralt in The Witcher 4’s debut trailer.
  • CD Projekt Red has brought in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s lead gameplay designer, known for a highlight feature of that ARPG.

If this all feels like a big handoff, it is — and in a good way. Geralt gets to be the grizzled mentor, Ciri finally gets her own lane, and CDPR is quietly stacking the deck with talent. I am into it.
