Fans were devastated by these departures from the show.

Chicago Med is a brilliant medical drama, which is different from the other two action-driven series of the franchise — Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. — in that it focuses more on the ethical, financial, and political issues that medical professionals have to face.

During the show's eight-year run, viewers said goodbye to a number of Chicago Med regulars, and while some of these departures were expected, others came as a surprise to fans.

Here are five exits from Chicago Meds, ranked from least to most shocking.

Dr. Natalie Manning

Actress Torrey DeVitto left her role as Natalie Manning on Chicago Med to pursue other career opportunities. According to the storyline, she was fired for stealing drugs from the hospital for her sick mother and ended up moving to Seattle with her son at the beginning of Season 7.

Dr. Connor Rhodes and Dr. Ava Bekker

The way these two characters, portrayed by Colin Donnell and Norma Kuhling, were written out shocked many viewers. After the two broke up, Ava murdered Connor's father to get him back, and when her ex found out the truth, she committed suicide right in front of him. Connor left Gaffney Chicago Medical Center for good to get a fresh start in life.

April Sexton

Yaya DaCosta, who played nurse April, quit Chicago Med after Season 6 to focus on other projects. In the show, April left the hospital to go through a nurse practitioner program, but she reappeared briefly again in Season 8 to get married to Dr. Ethan Choi.

Dr. Ethan Choi

Brian Tee's Chief of Emergency Medicine Ethan Choi was many fans' favorite character, so his departure from the show was incredibly sad. Of course, viewers would love to see the character back to the hospital, but Ethan must be pretty busy now running his mobile clinic for the underprivileged with his wife April Sexton.

Dr. William Halstead

Of all the other exits from Chicago Med, Will's was the most devastating for fans. Nick Gehlfuss' character left Gaffney in the Season 8 finale due to a disagreement with the new hospital owner after failing to repair his hernia. But on the bright side, Will moved to Seattle to be reunited with Natalie Manning — and we're all for it!

Keep in mind that Chicago Med has been renewed for another season, which is expected to premiere in the fall of 2023.
