Friends Fans Agree This Was the Most Underdeveloped Character Arc on the Show
Apparently, these two characters never really bonded over the course of the sitcom's run.
Summary
- Friends remains one of the most popular sitcoms in the world.
- The show failed to develop the relationship between two of its main characters.
- Audiences feel it was a missed opportunity not to focus on the duo's arc.
Although it has been twenty years since the last episode of Friends aired in May 2004, the NBC sitcom remains one of the most popular comedy shows of all time. When it premiered in 1994, the show instantly won over audiences with its simple storytelling, clever plots, and the hilarious jokes and circumstances its six relatable main characters found themselves in. As a result, Friends established itself as one of the most popular shows on TV, beloved by viewers around the world.
Over its ten-year run, Friends became a classic sitcom, and its stars earned widespread acclaim and millions of dollars thanks to the show's enormous popularity. The recipe for the NBC comedy's success was simple - its characters and their complicated relationships were a joy to watch.
But there was one character arc that wasn't as well-developed as the rest - much to the fans' chagrin.
Chandler and Rachel's Relationship Never Got Enough Spotlight
As the central characters of the show, Chandler Bing and Rachel Green had a lot of interactions. However, upon closer examination, it appears that the duo never developed a close relationship despite spending a lot of time together.
Rachel was friends with Monica and Phoebe. She also had romantic relationships with Ross and Joey. In turn, Chandler was best friends with the latter two characters and eventually married Monica, but he never really got close to Rachel. And while the jokester of the sitcom didn't seem to get close to Phoebe either, it was okay because of her carefree personality. But given the electric dynamic between him and Rachel, it's a shame their relationship was so criminally underdeveloped.
Friends' Fans on the Missed Opportunity
Naturally, the showrunners' blunder didn't go unnoticed by viewers.
'Chandler and Rachel are arguably the most underrated duo on the show. They didn't get stories together very often, but when they did, it was always comedy gold,' one YouTube user commented.
Ultimately, viewers believe that Rachel and Chandler's chemistry would have been enough to create a powerful duo on the show.
'They really had the "sassy gay best friend and popular, mean girl that actually cared for each other" interaction going on all the time,' another YouTuber wrote.
On the other hand, the two characters' interactions might seem so spicy and rousing because of how rare they actually are. In this case, there was just the right amount of Chandler and Rachel arc to make them appealing. But who knows what Friends would have been like if the showrunners had given this relationship more development?
