This would've been the best example of enemies-turned-friends trope on television.

Summary

  • During its eleven-year run on NBC, Frasier didn't change much about its main characters' relationships.
  • There was a character arc that the show absolutely overlooked.
  • Frasier's enmity with his neighbor would be a nice starting point for their friendship.
  • Fans are eager to see that underexplored character in the recent reboot.

What kind of people do you usually befriend? They probably share a lot of your thoughts and tastes. Then, more importantly, they are fun to be around. Finally, their company is invigorating. And you don't even have to agree on everything – these three factors define a great friendship.

In that sense, Frasier missed a wonderful opportunity to create a most satisfying friendship arc on the show. Following the title character from an earlier sitcom, Cheers, the cult NBC comedy spanned a whopping eleven seasons on the air, exploring the lives of Dr. Crane and his family and friends. Remarkably, the show's cast of characters changed very little over the course of its long run, with the characters' relationships remaining virtually the same as they were when Frasier began. And that nipped a perfect character arc in the bud.

Frasier's Feud with Cam Winston

One of Frasier's most beloved recurring characters, Cam Winston, was Dr. Crane's old nemesis, whose feud dated back to Cheers. As Frasier's upstairs neighbor, Cam was a major source of annoyance to the sitcom's central character, with the two constantly bickering over the placement of apartment signs, parking spaces, and even balcony rights. Needless to say, it was hilarious to watch. But there was a good reason for it.

Cam and Fraiser had a lot in common. They dressed alike and seemed to have the same tastes, quirks and personality traits. For this reason, they could have made a great duo, dominating the scene on Frasier and making the rest of the characters miserable with their witty remarks. Unfortunately, the sitcom never ventured in that direction.

A Way to Fix It

As Paramount+'s reboot of Frasier premiered this year, many fans are hopeful to see their favorite characters on the show. That includes Cam, of course.

'Man, it would be so cool to see Cam again in the new series. He was one of the best parts of Season 9,' one Reddit user wrote.

In fact, some fans are already anticipating the character's return, which will undoubtedly bring a lot of comic relief.

'Cam encroaching on Frasier's territory would be hilarious! He could hear through the Harvard grapevine that they are considering bringing Cam on as a professor or something. I hope this happens – they could get really creative,' another Redditor suggested.

While it's not yet clear whether the revamped Frasier will be renewed for a second season, it's clear that viewers are eager to see Brian Stokes Mitchell reprise his role.
