Foundation Gets Early Season 4 Renewal—Apple TV+ Doubles Down on Its Sci-Fi Hit

Apple TV+ isn’t waiting for the dust to settle—Foundation just scored a surprise Season 4 pickup before the latest season even ends.
Apple is not done with the space math. Apple TV+ just locked in Foundation for Season 4, and they’re doing it before Season 3 even wraps up this Friday, September 12. Bold move, but the show’s been on a roll.
Quick context check: Season 3 premiered in July and has been getting strong notices ever since, currently sitting at a Certified Fresh 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. So yeah, the momentum is real.
New captains on the bridge
There’s a behind-the-scenes shuffle worth flagging. After creator David S. Goyer stepped away as showrunner over a year ago, Apple is bringing in Ian Goldberg (Fear the Walking Dead) as an executive producer and co-showrunner alongside David Kob, who’s been with Foundation since Season 1. Production on Season 4 is slated to start in early 2026 — not exactly around the corner, so settle in.
'There is no series quite like Foundation, and we feel lucky and honored to be carrying the torch forward as co-showrunners into season four. We look forward to continuing the epic, emotional storytelling that defined the first three seasons of the show, and to be working alongside some of the most talented, passionate creative partners in the business.'
That’s Goldberg and Kob setting the tone for what’s next.
Apple’s read on the fandom
'It’s been fantastic to watch Foundation become such a global phenomenon, with fans tuning in from every corner of the world. With each new season, the excitement around this trailblazing sci-fi epic just keeps building due to the bold storytelling and collective artistry of this extraordinarily talented cast and creative team. We’re excited to keep exploring this universe together in season four.'
That’s Apple TV+ executive Matt Cherniss doing the victory lap. Honestly, not undeserved.
Who’s in the mix
On screen, the series is still led by Lee Pace and Jared Harris, with the latest season featuring Lou Llobell, Cherry Jones, Brandon P. Bell, Synnøve Karlsen, Cody Fern, Tómas Lemarquis, Alexander Siddig, Troy Kotsur, Pilou Asbæk, Laura Birn, Cassian Bilton, Terrence Mann, and Rowena King.
Off screen, even though Goyer exited as showrunner, he remains an executive producer alongside Bill Bost, Lee Pace, Michael Satrazemis, and Robyn Asimov. Paramount Television Studios continues to produce the series for Apple TV+.
So the headline: Season 4 is official, new co-showrunners are in place, Season 3 signs off this Friday, and cameras won’t roll again until early 2026. Inside baseball? A little. But for a show this sprawling, the long game tracks.
