Fast franchise stuck in neutral? Jason Momoa is revved to bring back Dante in Fast X: Part 2, but he still hasn’t seen a script.

Quick pit stop on the Fast saga: the engines are still idling, and the finish line keeps drifting further down the road.

Where things actually stand

  • Fast X hit theaters in 2023 and hauled in over $704.8 million worldwide. Not exactly a franchise on fumes.
  • Back at Universal's CinemaCon presentation two years ago, Vin Diesel told the room that Fast X: Part 2 would arrive in 2025 and serve as the franchise's 'final' chapter.
  • Fast-forward to now: during a new chat with The Playlist about his Hawaiian epic Chief of War and other projects, Jason Momoa said he still has not seen a script for Fast X: Part 2.
"I would love to come back and play, man. People all over the world love that character - it's crazy. But I got no script, so not that soon."

That is... not the update you want to hear when the movie was once teased for this year. And yeah, it is almost the end of September. Unless Universal plans to stealth-drop a mega-budget tentpole (they won’t), 2025 is basically out.

So what is the holdup?

Universal isn’t saying. Could be scheduling (wrangling this ensemble is always a headache), could be script work (Fast X left a wild cliffhanger to clean up), could be budget. Probably some mix of all three. The only hard data point we have is Momoa saying there is no script in his hands yet. That’s pretty inside baseball for a project that was once parked on the calendar.

For what it’s worth, the franchise doesn’t look dead; it’s just unusually quiet for something this big. But if this really is the 'final' lap, they need the landing to feel worth the wait, not like a rushed pit stop.

Your turn

Why do you think Fast X: Part 2 is taking so long? Scheduling chaos, story challenges, budget math, all of the above? And how would you wrap the saga after that last cliffhanger? Drop your best endings below. I’ll bring the NOS.
