Far Cry Levels Up to TV at FX, With Noah Hawley and Rob Mac at the Helm
Ubisoft's Far Cry is heading to FX as a TV series from Noah Hawley and Rob Mac, with Rob Mac set to star in the first season.
FX is turning Ubisoft's Far Cry into a TV show, and they are not messing around: Noah Hawley (Alien: Earth) and Rob Mac (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are co-creating it. The plan mirrors the games: new setting and new characters every season. And yes, Rob Mac is jumping in front of the camera too for season 1.
The quick version
- FX has ordered a Far Cry series based on Ubisoft's hit video game franchise.
- Noah Hawley and Rob Mac are co-creating the show.
- Format: anthology. Each season resets with a new location and cast.
- Rob Mac will star in the first season.
- FX Entertainment chief Nick Grad says Hawley and Mac have delivered across six series and 32 total seasons for the network, and he expects this one to be just as bold. Ubisoft is on board and trusting them with the brand.
Why this pairing fits
Far Cry works best as a reset-button kind of world, where the vibe stays the same but the story changes. Hawley literally thrives on that format, and he even name-checks Fargo as his template. Bringing in Rob Mac adds an 'OK, we might get weird and funny with this' energy that Far Cry can handle.
"What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it's an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme."
What the team is saying
Rob Mac calls working with Hawley a longtime wish checked off the list, says Ubisoft has been generous in handing over one of gaming's crown jewels, and gives FX credit for backing him all the way. Hawley frames the show as a big, year-to-year shapeshifter that still pokes at human nature through chaos, and he says he and Rob share a taste for irreverent, ambitious swings. From the network side, FX's Nick Grad points to their track record together and says he expects something original, gripping, and wildly entertaining, with a thank-you to Ubisoft for trusting them with the property.
What we still do not know
No details yet on the first season's setting, characters, or timeline. It is an FX series order, Hawley and Mac are steering the ship, and Rob Mac is in the season 1 cast. Beyond that, we are waiting on the specifics. More to come.
