It isn't as obvious as you might think.

Summary

  • VR explores many fascinating love stories.
  • There's one romance arc that fans seem to hate unanimously.
  • Its unconventionality isn't the stumbling stone.

Since its premiere, Virgin River has been Netflix's top romantic drama for a very simple reason. The show features a plethora of exciting relationships that resonate with the legions of fans it has accumulated over its five-season run.

While VR is centered on the love arc between Mel Monroe and Jack Sheridan, it depicts a variety of romances for every viewer to enjoy. For example, some fans find the main characters' relationship too over-the-top to invest in. As a result, they opt for side storylines, including Hope McCrea and Doc's tried-and-true romance and Brie and Brady's sizzling chemistry. But there's one love arc that fans can't seem to get their heads around.

Unconventional Romance

As Hope's best friend, Muriel has been entangled in her bestie's problems with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Doc. So much so that she fell for the man herself. Fortunately, she quickly recovered from this infatuation and moved on with her life.

Later, Muriel met Doc's new assistant, Dr. Cameron, and the two hit it off in Season 5, despite their fifteen-year age difference. Undoubtedly, the reversed age difference doesn't elevate the couple in the eyes of the audience, but intriguingly, it's not the main reason why fans aren't sold on this romance.

Not a Match Made in Heaven

Although Cameron and Muriel appear to have great chemistry, they are not compatible in the long run because their relationship lacks any foundation other than passion. As a result, many people view it as a simple hookup that shouldn't be dragged out into a romance story.

'I know 15 year gap relationships happen, but I cannot get behind them. Muriel just seems so desperate for any man who looks at her, Cameron is a whiny baby,' one Reddit user wrote.

Ultimately, many fans find Cameron too emotionally inferior to Miriam to make for a good partner for her. Under the circumstances, it isn't surprising that many viewers can't wait for the woman to realize it and break up with him.

'In general, I agree that a 15 year age gap isn't that big of a deal, but I also cannot ship Muriel and Cameron. I actually really like Muriel as a character, but this relationship is way off base for her,' another Redditor observed. 'Cameron is emotionally immature, and Muriel deserves better than him.'

At the same time, let's hope that this poignant moment doesn't take place in the upcoming Christmas specials, scheduled for November 30th. No one wants a bittersweet festive split-up, do they?
