Spoiler: some of them are not very pretty.

It now seems almost certain that Kevin Costner will exit Yellowstone after (or during) season 5. And while filming has been suspended and there's confusion about what happens next for the show, fans have taken to Reddit to demand a proper send-off for John Dutton - and to chuck in a few suggestions as to how he might go.

Of course, one of the major elements of Yellowstone is the acknowledgement that everybody is flawed. But for some, John Dutton is more flawed than most and deserves a fitting ending.

'He goes to sleep and doesn't wake up' was one of the tamer suggestions. But is that really a TV ending for any character?

Another user proposes that 'While crossing the street, he isn't paying attention because he's on his cell phone…a fat, middle-aged white couple runs him over while jamming out to 'California Gurls' on their way to go skiing'. It's a bit niche, but you start to get the sense that viewers have high expectations for his exit.

But then the suggestions took a slightly darker turn. 'John sh**s his pants, then bleeds out…' was one idea. No real context was provided and it's not entirely clear what the medical background to this potential demise is. But you do get the impression it would be a scene that would go down in TV history with most people not overly interested in exactly how the situation unfolded.

And finally: 'Dies from a heart attack rubbing one out in his bathroom and the whole episode is the family looking for him. After several days, the smell of rotting flesh gives it away. They bury him next to Monica's kid which pisses off the native Americans and leads to a whole new plot line'.

Again, it seems that considerable thought has gone into the death scene itself without too much explanation of why. And it's the type of plot twist that might have fit better in a show like Game of Thrones in which nothing about it would have felt at odds with what the show was. Let's face it, had Joffrey gone that way, we'd have all raised a smile.

But does it fit in Yellowstone? Who knows? In fact, who even knows if Kevin Costner will come back for long enough to record a memorable exit – or whether Taylor Sheridan will want to give him one.

And when you put it like that, death on the bathroom floor looks increasingly likely.
