Fans Call for New Judges After American Idol 2023 Controversies Pile Up
Simon Cowell may have been too harsh, but the current judges should definitely go, fans say.
The new season of American Idol has not been short on ratings, attracting more viewers than ever, both old and new. But sadly, with this season's popularity came a lot of controversy — and it has mostly to do with the judges rather than the contestants.
Of course, it's hard to please everyone, and the show's judges have been both praised and panned by its viewers.
However, the judging panel has so far failed to prove their worth this season, as fans think Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie are incompetent and can't provide adequate criticism to the contestants.
A number of controversies have led to the fandom's dissatisfaction with the American Idol judging panel in Season 21. Perry, Bryan, and Richie have been criticized for gaslighting some of the contestants, lacking interest in the show and their duties, and above all else, their overall approach to judging the singers.
'No one is ever offered constructive criticism or flat out criticism anymore. It's the "everyone gets a trophy" attitude,' one of the fans complained.
As many have pointed out, the judges are too soft on the contestants. While this may be a nice thing for the singers, who don't get demotivated by harsh and scathing criticism, this attitude doesn't help them develop their talents.
'You have a situation like the Top 12 elimination where everyone is being told that's the best performance they've ever given and they're so amazing… and then they still get eliminated by the judges,' another fan added.
However, some commenters shared a different opinion, saying that the show used to be worse and now we are seeing an improvement in the judges' treatment of the contestants.
'They're making it the opposite environment of openly laughing at auditions and humiliating people on TV in front of millions of people,' somebody pointed out.
According to some fans, the judges are trying to create a healthy atmosphere within the competition. In the early seasons, many contestants became the laughingstock of America simply because the judges were too harsh on them. This season, however, the judging panel seems to have curbed the toxicity.
As for their constructive criticism, we hope that Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie are saving their useful comments for this season's concluding episodes.
The next episode of American Idol will air on April 30, 2023.
