Get ready to plunge back into the underground world of Tokyo's Kabukicho district.

In April 2022, the crime neo-noir drama Tokyo Vice, loosely based on Jake Adelstein's memoir, debuted on HBO Max. Both the book and the series tell the story of how the neon glow of Tokyo's nightlife hides gruesome mysteries that are conveniently glossed over in the media. Mafia squabbles, drug dealing, sex trafficking, and ruthless murders are all part of the horrific daily life of 1990s Japan, unknown to the average tourist.

The series' protagonist is the fictional version of Jake Adelstein (Ansel Elgort), a young American reporter who becomes the first foreigner to work for the Yomiuri Shimbun, one of Japan's largest newspapers. The show's first season ended with casualties and threats for Adelstein and his mentor, detective Hitoro Katagiri (Ken Watanabe), who were targeted by the boss of one of the yakuza.

HBO's series was well received by critics and fans and was renewed for a second season in June 2022. But when will it be released? The real Jake Adelstein seems to know the answer.

While no official statement has been made by HBO regarding the release window, we can assume that Season 2 has already completed filming. Adelstein hinted at this with a recent post on his Instagram account.

After sharing his thoughts on life's unexpected intersections, Adelstein expresses his hope that the second season of Tokyo Vice will come out as early as in the fall of this year. Of course, this announcement is pretty exciting, but we must take it with a grain of salt — even though Adelstein is an executive producer on the show, it's still up to HBO to set the release date.

If the second season follows Adelstein's book, the main characters will continue to face mortal danger for quite some time before they can uncover the terrible truth. Fans are hoping that Adelstein's expectations for the new season's release date are correct, and we'll see the first episodes of the second chapter of Tokyo Vice premiere on HBO in the fall of 2023.
