An Andor standout and 10 more actors have boarded Netflix’s Extraction series, propelling Chris Hemsworth’s hit franchise from the 2020 original and 2023 sequel into a full-blown TV expansion as a third film readies.

Netflix is turning its hit action franchise Extraction into a series, and the cast just ballooned in a big way. If you lost track: the movies are still marching on (a third film is in the works), and now the show is gearing up with a pretty eclectic lineup.

Quick refresher on the universe

Extraction started as a 2020 Netflix movie led by Chris Hemsworth and directed by Sam Hargrave. It spawned a 2023 sequel, Extraction 2, and Netflix confirmed earlier this year that a TV series is happening too. The show already had Omar Sy, Boyd Holbrook, Natalie Dormer, Waleed Zuaiter, and Ed Speleers on board. Sy is the one front and center here.

The new additions

According to Deadline, eleven more actors have signed on:

  • Muhannad Ben Amor (Andor) — yes, Wilmon from the Disney+ series
  • Sacha Dhawan (The Great)
  • Ross McCall (White Collar)
  • Pip Torrens (Preacher)
  • Sam Woolf (We Were the Lucky Ones)
  • Michael Zananiri (Once Upon a Time in Gaza)
  • Riyad Sliman (Ramy)
  • Aaron Heffernan (Brassic)
  • Jojo Macari (Those About to Die)
  • Theo Ogundipe (Mickey 17)
  • Emma Appleton (Everything I Know About Love)

What the show is actually about

Season 1 runs eight episodes and follows a mercenary played by Omar Sy on a high-risk mission to rescue hostages in Libya. The pitch is straightforward but intense: he is stuck between warring factions and a bunch of ruthless killers, forced into life-or-death decisions while wrestling with some heavy emotional baggage. It sounds more boots-on-the-ground than globe-trotting, which could be a smart way to differentiate the series from the films.

Who is running the operation

The series is produced by AGBO, the company founded by Joe and Anthony Russo. Glen Mazzara is the showrunner, writer, and an executive producer. The executive producer list is long: the Russo Brothers themselves, Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes, and Chris Castaldi for AGBO, plus Sam Hargrave, Eric Gitter, and Peter Schwerin. Stacked cast, stacked credits.

"I am a very lucky man. Omar is a huge talent. Joe, Anthony, and Angela have welcomed me into the AGBO family. The team at Netflix is truly the best I have ever worked with. Very lucky indeed."

When to expect it

No premiere date yet. Netflix is keeping that under wraps for now. In the meantime, the franchise side of this universe is still alive and kicking, with that third Extraction movie also on the way.
