Emma Stone’s Bugonia Hits Digital in Under a Month — What It Means for Theaters
Emma Stone’s sci-fi comedy Bugonia hits digital just weeks after its Oct. 31 theatrical debut, with buy-or-rent options on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Fandango At Home, and more starting Nov. 25 at 12 a.m. ET.
Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone just dropped their new sci-fi comedy Bugonia on digital way earlier than expected. We barely got through the Halloween candy and it is already rentable at home. Given how the movie has been performing, that tracks.
Where to watch it right now
Bugonia hit digital storefronts to buy or rent on November 25 at 12:00 a.m. ET (that is November 24 at 9:00 p.m. PT), per Decider. You can grab it on Amazon, Apple TV, Fandango At Home, and the usual suspects.
What is it, and who is in it?
This is the fourth Lanthimos/Stone team-up after The Favourite, Poor Things, and Kinds of Kindness. Here, Emma Stone plays Michelle, a high-powered pharma CEO who gets kidnapped by two guys convinced she is an alien. Tonally, it is oddball-funny with the light sci-fi premise doing the heavy lifting.
Quick specs: it runs about two hours, the cast includes Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Stavros Halkias, and Aidan Delbis, and it is sitting at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes so far.
So why the quick pivot to digital?
Short answer: money. After almost a month in theaters, Bugonia has made about $32 million worldwide against a reported $55 million production budget (via The Numbers). Screen counts are slipping week to week, so the studio is clearly hoping an early at-home release widens the net.
Honestly, not shocking. Lanthimos is wildly consistent with critics and wildly inconsistent at the box office. The Favourite broke out to $95 million worldwide, Poor Things went even higher with $111 million, and then Kinds of Kindness in 2024 did $16 million total. Bugonia started hot by his standards with a $5 million domestic wide-release weekend, a career-best opening for him, then cooled off fast.
When will it stream on Peacock?
Right now, Bugonia is only in theaters and available digitally to buy or rent. No subscription streaming yet. But based on how Universal and Focus Features have been moving lately, there is a pretty reliable pattern: most of their titles slide onto Peacock about 6–8 weeks after the theatrical debut. Recent examples:
- Honey Don't!: in theaters August 22, 2025; on Peacock October 3, 2025
- Black Bag: in theaters March 14, 2025; on Peacock May 2, 2025
- Last Breath: in theaters February 28, 2025; on Peacock April 25, 2025
If Bugonia follows that playbook, expect it to hit Peacock in late December 2025 or early January 2026. That timing also lines up with its DVD release on December 23, which typically lands right before or alongside a streaming drop.
Bottom line
Bugonia is still in theaters, but if you are curious and do not feel like waiting for streaming, it is already up for digital purchase and rental. Given the box office, the early at-home option makes sense. Whether it finds a bigger audience there is the real test.
