Summary
- Eloise and Cressida's supposed friendship in Season 3 of Bridgerton has been a hot topic for a while.
- Many fans were concerned that Eloise had befriended Cressida to get back at Penelope.
- The actresses behind Eloise and Cressida say their character's relationship is more genuine than that.
When Netflix finally released the trailer for the upcoming third season of Bridgerton, there was a lot of excitement in the fandom. But there was also a sense of unease about some of the things depicted in the clip.
Season 3 focuses on the romance between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherngton, and will also explore her relationship with Eloise, with whom Pen had a major falling out in Season 2. And in that sense, the trailer seemed ominous as it showed Eloise cozying up to Penelope's worst bully, Cressida Cowper.
In the trailer, Eloise and Cressida, who previously seemed to loathe each other, walk hand in hand like best friends, which many fans thought was a spiteful move on Eloise's part to upset Penelope. But apparently the new pairing is more genuine than it seems.
Eloise and Cressida Have a Real Friendship
Eloise and Cressida are poles apart. Cressida is preoccupied with finding a husband, while Eloise couldn't be more indifferent to the idea of marriage. Cressida is ruthless and willing to go to great lengths to get what she wants without regard for others, while Eloise is honest and kind. But it seems they have a lot to teach each other.
According to Claudia Jessie and Jessica Madsen, who play Eloise and Cressida respectively, their relationship will provide the audience with many wholesome moments. And indeed, the two characters need each other at this moment in their lives.
'[Cressida] has shown her kindness and Eloise has been a bit lost at this time and found someone being nice to her. I think it's nice, they do teach each other a lot as well,' Claudia Jessie explained the depth of Eloise and Cressida's relationship. 'It's quite nice to be able to see that there's this beautiful human side to [Cressida] as well, and that precedent does fit Eloise as well, because [Cressida] teaches her how to listen a bit more.'
Jessica Madsen, in turn, hopes that viewers will see that even someone who seems harsh and cruel on the surface may have a kind heart and just need some help to show it.
'They are an unusual pairing but they have a real friendship and they learn a lot from each other,' Jessica Madsen chimed in. 'Eloise really propels [Cressida] into looking at who she is and how she's behaved and opens her up.'
Most importantly, we now know that Eloise isn't trying to get back at Penelope by befriending her biggest bully. And that leaves a lot of hope for a reconciliation between the former best friends.
Season 3 of Bridgerton premieres on 16 May.
