There is little variety in dancer styles this season.

Summary

  • Dancing with the Stars is one of the most popular competition shows in the US.
  • After the largely unsuccessful thirty-first season, the show has once again found favor with fans.
  • The show needs professional dancers with skills beyond Latin and ballroom dancing.

Each year sees hundreds of new TV shows emerge, but only a few of them become hits that last several seasons. Even fewer projects manage to run for over ten seasons, let alone thirty. ABC's Dancing with the Stars is among these rare titans of American television.

Based on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, Dancing with the Stars premiered in the US in 2005 and quickly became one of the country's most-watched competition shows. It has since produced an impressive thirty-two seasons, during which countless celebrities have showcased their dancing skills on the show's stage.

Currently, season 32 of DWTS is airing on ABC. So far, it has resonated well with the audience, who have been sharing their excitement for the new season all over social media. However, there seems to be one element fans believe could make Dancing with the Stars even better.

Back to Former Glory

Given that Dancing with the Stars has been on the air for eighteen years, it's understandable that some viewers might have grown weary of the show's format. So, it's safe to say the show's popularity is not what it used to be. However, it's not exactly dead in the water yet, with millions tuning in to watch it every week.

Recently, fans were psyched to learn that the show was returning to its original broadcaster, ABC after season 31 aired exclusively on Disney+ for some mysterious reason. Thus, the new thirty-second season feels more familiar and somewhat nostalgic, but therein lies its biggest weakness: it leans too heavily on the show's past glory, making it difficult for some fans to really enjoy it.

Unimaginative Dance Routines

It wouldn't be accurate to say that season 32 of DWTS has only featured Latin or ballroom dances, but it's fair to point out that these styles have dominated. Furthermore, the professional dancers this season primarily seem to excel in these two specific styles of choreography. As a result, when they tackle other dance genres like jazz or contemporary, the performance often falls short.

DWTS should definitely consider diversifying its cast of professional dancers so that when it's something other than Latin or ballroom dancing, at least some couples will look like they know what they're doing. It's actually a bit of a puzzle why this issue still hasn't been addressed, especially seeing how Strictly Come Dancing, the original British show DWTS is based on, always featured a broad range of professional dancers skilled in a variety of dance styles. You can see for yourself.

Dancing with the Stars season 32, episode 6 is scheduled to premiere on ABC on October 31.
