The sequel to the cult series won't feature one of its main anti-heroes, Boyd Crowder… But there will be another Boyd!

The iconic neo-western Justified will soon return to our screens, continuing the story of the US Marshal in a cowboy hat, Raylan Givens, played by Timothy Olyphant.

Based on Elmore Leonard's book City Primeval, which actually has a different protagonist, the events of the new series will take place in a completely different setting — the city of Detroit instead of Harlan County, Kentucky.

'Sure, we have Raylan — we knew that was money in the bank — and we have Elmore's book, but we had to create this whole new world for him to be in, this whole new cast of characters,' showrunner Dave Andron shared.

The change of location also means that we're unlikely to see Boyd Crowder, one of the main characters in the original series and an enemy/friend of the protagonist. Instead, there will be a new villain, played by Boyd Holbrook — Clement Mansell, a killer who has managed to find loopholes in the law and get away with his crimes.

According to the plot, 15 years have passed and Raylan moved to Miami, Florida, continuing to work for the police department and raising his 15-year-old daughter. However, the Mansell case brought him to Detroit. This is why most of the old characters are missing in the new show, and this fact has been indirectly confirmed by Timothy Olyphant himself.

'On one hand, I really missed the cast from the original series, and on the other hand, I was so in awe and honored to work with the cast on this one,' the actor said.

The absence of the beloved characters, including the witty and charismatic Boyd Crowder, in City Primeval may be upsetting for fans. But of course, this decision is understandable, as bringing them back in a different setting would be strange and unjustified for the plot.

However, the new cast is sure to delight viewers. In particular, City Primeval's main antagonist, Clement Mansell, is played by Boyd Holbrook — a fan-favorite actor who is known for his role in the crime drama series Narcos about the capture of Pablo Escobar.

So despite the completely new environment that Raylan Givens will find himself in, fans are excited for the new Justified show to come out. The first two episodes will air on July 18 on FX.
