Ditch the stain remover: a simple new trick is making even long-set grease stains vanish—no harsh chemicals required.

If you have a shirt banished to house-duty because a grease spot survived the wash, bring it back. There is a low-tech, pantry-level trick that takes a couple of minutes and an iron. No fancy stain removers, no drama.

The quick fix

You need three things: baking soda, an iron set to medium heat, and a thin piece of dry cotton (or gauze) to buffer the fabric. That is it.

  1. Lay the garment flat on an ironing board or a table.
  2. Slide a layer of dry gauze or thin cotton under the stained area to protect the surface beneath.
  3. Generously cover the grease mark with dry baking soda. It acts like a sponge for oil.
  4. Heat the iron to a medium setting and switch off steam.
  5. Press the iron over the soda-covered spot for 1–2 minutes, keeping the iron moving in small passes so you do not overheat one area.
  6. Shake or brush away the powder. The stain should be gone, or at least dramatically lighter.

Why this works

Baking soda absorbs oil. The warmth and pressure from the iron help draw the grease up and into the powder instead of letting it sit in the fibers. That combo can lift marks that a regular wash leaves behind.

Real-world check

This has been tested on a favorite blouse that took a droplet of cooking oil. A normal wash left a visible spot. After a single pass with baking soda and a medium-hot iron, the stain fully disappeared—no ring, no shadow.

Read this before you plug in

Give the fabric a quick heat test on an inside seam to confirm it can handle the iron setting you plan to use. Keep the soda completely dry and stick with moderate heat. If the iron runs too hot or there is any moisture, pale powdery traces can show on dark fabrics and they are a pain to lift later.

One more thing: skip steam and do not grind the soda into the fabric. Heat and steady pressure do the work here.

For set-in grease spots that shrugged off the wash, this method punches above its weight. Two minutes, pantry item, and your clothes earn a second chance outside the house.
