Disney Confirms Lilo & Stitch 2 Release Date — Ohana Returns
Disney's new CEO Josh D'Amario sets Lilo & Stitch 2 for a Memorial Day weekend 2028 theatrical debut.
Disney just circled Memorial Day weekend 2028 for Lilo & Stitch 2. The sequel to 2025's surprise juggernaut live-action remake is officially headed back to theaters, and the timing comes with a bit of corporate theater: the new CEO announced it on day one of the job. That same presentation also dropped a date for Incredibles 3. Not subtle, but effective.
The date, the flex, the very Disney timing
Lilo & Stitch 2 opens May 26, 2028, which is Memorial Day weekend. As of now, it has the frame to itself. The original live-action remake wasn’t even supposed to hit theaters at first — it was developed for Disney+ — but the studio pivoted and launched it wide on May 23, 2025. Reviews were mixed (especially among fans of the 2002 animated classic), but audiences showed up. The remake hauled in $423.8 million in the U.S. and $1.038 billion worldwide.
Disney made the sequel official on June 26 of that same year — a cute nod to Stitch’s experiment number, 626. And now it has a date on the board.
New boss, big calendar
The release date landed during a shareholders meeting led by Disney’s new CEO, Josh D'Amario, on his first official day in the role (effective March 18, 2026). He also planted a flag for another big sequel: Incredibles 3 arrives June 16, 2028.
So what is Lilo & Stitch 2 actually about?
Story details are under wraps. The odds of a straight lift from the 2005 direct-to-video Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch feel slim. More likely: the movie borrows from 2003’s Stitch: The Movie and the follow-up series, which sent Lilo and Stitch on a mission to track down Jumba’s other 625 experiments (the so-called cousins) and match them with the one place they belong. The 2025 film already teased two fan favorites: Experiment 624 (Angel) and 625 (Reuben).
Who is making it
No confirmation yet on whether Dean Fleischer Camp returns to direct. The big creative move is on the writing side: Chris Sanders — the character’s creator, director of the original animated film, and the voice of Stitch — is scripting the sequel.
What needs a course correction
Two choices in the 2025 remake set off alarms for longtime fans. First, turning Jumba, Stitch’s creator, into the primary villain instead of Captain Gantu. Second, sending Nani to college and having her leave Lilo and Stitch with David and his grandmother. Sanders’ script has an obvious opportunity to realign those pieces.
Why Disney is betting big (again)
Even with the backlash, the remake minted money. Stitch is a merchandising machine, one of Disney’s most bankable characters, full stop. Live-action follow-ups have been a headache for the studio — The Jungle Book 2 and Cruella 2 are still parked in development hell — but a locked date signals priority status. If Lilo & Stitch 2 performs closer to Mufasa: The Lion King than Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, that will be more than enough for Disney.
