Don’t skip the credits: Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora – From the Ashes slips in a stealth cameo that hints at the franchise’s next big move.

So, about that big debate over whether Quaritch bites it at the end of Avatar: Fire and Ash? Yeah, that just got cleared up by the franchise itself, in a very roundabout way. Short version: the guy is not dead.

Quick refresher: how Avatar 3 leaves Quaritch

At the end of Fire and Ash, Jake tries to talk Quaritch down. Quaritch basically says nope, takes a leap into a wall of flames, and disappears. Classic movie rule kicks in here: no body, no closure. Still, plenty of folks figured that was it for him.

The game just answered the question

A new clip from the game Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora - From the Ashes popped up online, pulled from the credits, and it features Quaritch very much alive and giving orders. He is talking to Major Bukowski and name-checking all sorts of RDA business like Varang, Bridgehead, and the Western Frontier.

"A little banshee told me we're down four of Varang's heavy hitters."

"Things are far from optimal all round. I need you back at Bridgehead. Pack your trash and get out of there zero dark early."

Asked if they're pulling out of the Western Frontier, he snaps: "Hell no. You'll keep running things remotely. Maintain pressure and let those insurgents simmer. It's time we regroup and reassess."

Where this lands in the canon

  • The From the Ashes clip is in the game's credits and has Quaritch commanding Major Bukowski after the Fire and Ash events.
  • According to Fandom, From the Ashes takes place a few weeks after James Cameron's latest movie.
  • Put together, that means Quaritch survives his fire dive and is still calling shots.

Fan reaction, and the bigger picture

Fans are split between the people who assumed he was fine (because, again, no body) and the ones who are genuinely surprised. Either way, most seem happy the franchise's favorite menace is still in play for Avatar 4 — if that actually moves forward.

And it probably should, because Quaritch sounds like he is being set up as the main focus of the next chapter. Cameron has said he is willing to walk away from the series if Fire and Ash doesn't make enough money, but he has also floated writing a book to close out the one dangling thread — which sure feels like it would be Quaritch. In other words: whether on screen or on the page, this story isn't done with him yet.
