When a Signature Role Becomes a Curse.

In film and television, some people end up being held hostage to a single role. No matter how talented and versatile these actors may be, fans will always remember them for one specific performance, a lifelong stigma perpetuated by the industry itself. While some manage to break out of the typecasting purgatory by showcasing their talents, others sink ever deeper into the rut of playing the same role over and over again as they become the signature faces of big franchises.

That is likely what happened to the wonderful actress Megan Boone. In 2013, she was a rising star in film and television with enormous career potential. Her fame grew after she starred in the now-iconic crime thriller, The Blacklist, in which Boone appeared alongside the legendary James Spader. Unfortunately, her career went downhill after her character was written out in Season 8.

Boone was recently spotted on the picket lines during the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, of which she is a member. While the decision to picket is entirely up to the actors, it shows that Boone still cares about the industry, even though her acting career has recently been in limbo.

Since leaving The Blacklist in 2021, she has hardly appeared anywhere except for minor supporting roles in an episode of The Underground Railroad and an episode of Accused. This conspicuous lack of roles is strange, given how big she was at one time.

Many fans felt it was a matter of how long the show had been on the air. Considering that the actress had only had small roles before, being a part of The Blacklist was quite overwhelming for both her and the fans, and it made it very difficult for viewers or producers to imagine her in any other role.

'She emerged from obscurity to become Elizabeth Keen, this strong, volatile, complicated unpredictable, and compelling character that captured our attention, and over time, our hearts,' a fan noted.

Unfortunately, by Season 8, Liz had effectively devolved into a dull supporting character and was eventually killed off, derailing Megan Boone's acting career in the process.

In addition, as mentioned above, long-running series don't always help the careers of the actors that play major roles in them. Think of Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum from Smallville or Ellen Pompeo from Grey's Anatomy — the shows brought fame and substantial financial success to the actors, but they also forever typecast them.

It would appear that the WGA and SAG strikes are going to continue for quite some time, putting the entire industry on pause. We hope this won't stop Megan Boone from looking for new projects and eventually returning to her former glory.
