Did Nintendo’s Next Mario Movie Just Get Spoiled? Fans Think the Sequel Title Has Leaked

With the Nintendo Direct just around the corner, internet sleuths are buzzing over what might be the real title for the Super Mario Bros Movie sequel—here’s what’s fueling all the hype.
File this under 'likely but not locked': right before today's Nintendo Direct, it looks like the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel title may have slipped out via a studio-registered web domain. It is exactly the title you think it is.
So... Super Mario Galaxy, the movie?
Spotted by the ever-watchful Wario64, NBCUniversal appears to have registered the domain 'supermariogalaxy.movie' on September 3. That strongly hints the sequel might be titled 'Super Mario Galaxy' — which, yes, is the same name as the beloved game that introduced Rosalina.
'supermariogalaxy.movie' was registered by NBCUniversal on September 3
This is some inside baseball, but worth noting: Universal used a .movie domain for the first film's official site too, which now redirects to the VOD/disc info. Studios often set these up early, and they usually mean something.
But hold up — it is not confirmed
There is a wrinkle. NBCUniversal previously seemed to accidentally point to a different title, 'Super Mario World.' That mixed messaging makes this less of a slam dunk and more of a strong maybe. Also, studios routinely register multiple domains just in case, so think of this as smoke, not fire.
What 'Galaxy' would imply
If this is the direction, expect the sequel to lean cosmic: star bits, planetoids, and Rosalina finally entering the animated universe. That part, at least, lines up perfectly with fan expectations.
Who is back in the booth?
No official casting yet for the sequel. The first movie starred Chris Pratt (Mario), Charlie Day (Luigi), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), and Jack Black (Bowser). If I had to bet, those four are returning, but nothing is confirmed right now.
Today's Nintendo Direct: when and what to watch for
The Direct hits today, September 12, at 2pm BST / 9am ET / 6am PT. It is the first proper Direct since Nintendo revealed the Switch 2 back in April, and expectations are... not small.
- Times: 2pm BST / 9am ET / 6am PT
- Likely headliners: 'Metroid Prime 4: Beyond' and 'Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment'
- Plus: a few mystery 2026 titles Nintendo is keeping close to the vest
- And with the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. coming up, do not be shocked if we get extra Mario news — including, potentially, that sequel title
Bottom line: 'supermariogalaxy.movie' existing is a big tell, but we have been faked out before. If Nintendo or Universal are going to say the title out loud, today is a prime time to do it. I will update once we get the official word. In the meantime, if you need something to queue up, I have a running list of this year's most exciting upcoming movies to pad your watchlist.
