DC Writer Drops Promising Update On Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man 4
Spidey’s next swing with Tobey Maguire isn’t out of the picture yet: The Batman – Part II co-writer Mattson Tomlin says his push to write Spider-Man 4 hasn’t been met with a no, fueling fresh optimism after a hint on X.
If you are still hanging on to the hope of Tobey Maguire suiting up one more time, you can keep that tiny flame lit. It is not a yes, but it is definitely not a no.
- Who: Mattson Tomlin, co-writer of The Batman - Part II
- What: says his Spider-Man 4 pitch with Tobey Maguire has not been rejected
- Where: on X (formerly Twitter)
- When: October 26, 2025
- Status: complicated, slow-moving, and very dependent on studio politics
- Context: Sam Raimi and Maguire are open to returning; Sony has not commented
What Tomlin actually said
A fan asked Tomlin on X if his Spider-Man 4 idea had any traction. His answer was cautious, but not discouraging:
"Slow and steady wins the race. There won't be anything to say about that for a long time (if ever!) because it involves a lot of people and politics and things going right that have nothing to do with me, but I haven't gotten a 'no' yet!"
Translation: there are a lot of decision-makers, schedules, rights questions, and agendas that he does not control. But nobody has shut the door.
What his version would be
Tomlin has been pretty clear about his angle: a grounded continuation of Sam Raimi's trilogy where Maguire's Peter Parker is juggling crime-fighting with being a dad. Back in July 2025, he said on X that, after eight Spider-Man films, the version that draws him in is Peter as a father.
The Raimi sequel that never happened
For anyone who needs the refresher: Spider-Man 4 was once on the calendar for May 2011 with Raimi back to direct and Maguire set to return. It fell apart over creative differences, and Sony pivoted to a reboot. The Amazing Spider-Man with Andrew Garfield landed in 2012 instead.
Where Raimi and Maguire stand now
Both have left the door open. Raimi said in 2022 that the Marvel multiverse made him feel like almost anything could happen again. And Maguire? He basically said just call him:
"If these guys called me and said, 'Would you show up tonight to hang out and goof around?' or 'Would you show up to do this movie or read a scene or do a Spider-Man thing?', it would be a 'yes!' Because why wouldn't I want to do that?"

The catch
Sony Pictures has not said a word about Tomlin's comments, and he is warning everyone it could be a long wait, if it happens at all. The exciting part is the lack of a hard no. The realistic part is that getting Raimi, Maguire, Sony, Marvel, and everyone else aligned is a marathon.
