Grace Caroline Currey will headline The Freeze, leading the cast.

Haunted pools were last year. Now we are apparently terrorizing the kitchen. Grace Caroline Currey (Mary Bromfield in 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods') is set to lead a new horror feature called 'The Freeze' where the big bad is... a refrigerator. Honestly, I respect the commitment to the bit.

The setup

Currey plays Morgan, a mom whose young son goes missing. Not long after, she drags home a vintage 1940s fridge, and things get very cold, very fast. The official tease puts it like this:

'She discovers something hidden within that is slowly freezing them inside their own home, and may hold the chilling truth behind her son's disappearance.'

Who is making this

Writer-director Trevor Mirosh is behind the camera, making his feature debut by expanding his award-winning 2017 short film, also titled 'The Freeze.' The feature isn’t a straight lift from the short, though. The short followed a woman and her roommate who brought home a haunted 1950s refrigerator; the feature shifts the focus to a mother, a missing child, and a 1940s model with secrets packed in ice. Same cursed appliance energy, different story angle.

Cast

Alongside Currey, the film features Natasha Henstridge, Milo Gibson, and James C. Clayton.

Where it stands

The movie shot in Canada and is already in post-production. Next stop: the American Film Market, where the team will shop it to distributors. The playbook here might ring a bell if you saw 'Night Swim' — another horror feature built from a director’s short (in that case Bryce McGuire’s), expanded into a studio release about a haunted swimming pool. Different element, same pipeline. Would not surprise me if a genre house like Blumhouse at least kicks the tires on this one.

Release timing and what’s next

No release date yet — that will depend on who buys it. In the meantime, Currey is also set to star as the title character in director Tash Ann’s short film 'Nadine.'
