Are we talking Cho Chang or Ginny?

The Harry Potter series saw The Boy Who Lived grow from an 11-year-old boy to a man with a family of his own. Off-screen, actor Daniel Radcliffe also met his first girlfriend on the set of the Wizarding World.

But how did that work out? Did Radcliffe emulate Harry as the worst possible date for Cho Chang? Or did the relationship turn out more like that of Harry and Ginny?

Well, it was somewhere between the two. The girl in question was Rosie Coker, a production assistant on Deathly Hallows Part II. While he hasn't always been comfortable sharing details of his private life in the public domain, Radcliffe said in a January 2012 interview that he and Rosie had been dating for 'just over a year'.

Fast forward 10 months to October 2012, though, and the relationship had run its course.

And pretty soon, rumours began to swirl about a new romantic interest in the life of Daniel Radcliffe. This time, it was Erin Darke – who he also met on a movie set. Kill Your Darlings was a 2013 biopic of American poet Allen Ginsberg (played by Radcliffe) in which Erin Darke played one of his love interests (Gwendolyn).

While working on the movie, the pair fell for each other and became a couple. In fact, they're still together now and had their first child in April 2023. The family split their time between homes in Fulham in the UK and Manhattan in New York.

And parenthood is one aspect of his personal life that Radcliffe was happy to discuss in interviews. Speaking to Newsweek in 2022, he described how he'd love his children to spend time 'around film sets' but was quick to point out that would 'love them to be in the art department' as he wouldn't want them to grow up in the spotlight.

You can see why. When he was first cast as Harry Potter, the young Daniel Radcliffe couldn't have imagined how the franchise would take off. As it was, he was made to grow up in the public eye as the face of a multi-million-dollar movie series. And things took their toll. He famously struggled to control his alcohol consumption in his late teens as a result of the pressure cooker environment he was living in. Something no parent wants for their child.

So, while there is no evidence that Daniel Radcliffe's first girlfriend was subjected to a similarly poor boyfriend as Cho Chang, the Harry Potter star's life has mirrored that of his on-screen persona as he has settled down and started a family with his second love.
