Crimson Peak's Main Star: Why Did Mia Wasikowska Leave Hollywood?
One of the main actresses of the 2010s almost disappeared from the screens.
Ten years ago, Mia Wasikowska was one of the leading actresses of her generation. She appeared in independent films as well as major projects. It seemed that even more significant roles awaited her in the future.
But gradually Mia began to appear less and less on screens and red carpets.
Mia Wasikowska Reconsidered Her Acting Career
Mia Wasikowska awoke as a star after the premiere of Alice in Wonderland in 2010. Ironically, Wasikowska's last major studio film was Alice Through the Looking Glass. The continuation of her journey into the magical world was directed by James Bobin, the movie received negative reviews and failed at the box office.
And Mia Wasikowska radically changed her career vector: since then, the actress has disappeared from the magazine headlines, left Hollywood and moved to her native Australia.
It is obvious that a series of major releases forced the actress to rethink her professional activities and at least take a break. Mia herself stated that she wanted to do more with her life than just sit in a trailer.
It turned out to be extremely important for the actress to find a sense of belonging somewhere, and not just on temporary movie sets. Mia compared this lifestyle to constantly changing schools. So burnout, disappointment and a lack of ambition to stay at the top of Hollywood led the actress to Sydney.
Now the Actress Mostly Appears in Indie Films
Mia Wasikowska may have left Hollywood behind, but that does not mean the actress has abandoned her career. In fact, she did not stop shining in front of the camera, she just stopped being in the spotlight. High-profile releases were replaced by independent films, which are usually screened at major festivals.
In 2018, Sundance hosted two premieres with Mia Wasikowska in the lead role: the western Damsel and the horror Piercing. The actress also supports Australian cinema: in 2019, the black comedy Judy and Punch was screened in Park City, and in 2021, critics praised Blueback at the Berlin Film Festival.
The latest indie hits starring Wasikowska are Bergman Island and Club Zero.
Mia Wasikowska Wants to Try Her Hand at Directing
Will Wasikowska ever return to Hollywood? The actress admits it is unlikely. Mia says that she would like to do the occasional Hollywood movie, but living in Los Angeles is clearly not in her plans.
After all, the actress has other things to do besides filming: for example, Wasikowska is passionate about photography. It is quite possible that the actress will try her hand at directing. Mia has already expressed her desire to work behind the camera.
