Bond buzz is building—Sydney Sweeney just weighed in on whispers that she’ll be 007’s next Bond girl. Here’s how she’s playing the speculation.

So, yes, the Sydney Sweeney-as-a-Bond-girl rumor is back. The twist this time: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos reportedly wants it to happen. Sweeney even went to his summer wedding to Lauren Sanchez, which is a fun detail but not the same thing as a contract. Either way, nothing gets real until director Denis Villeneuve signs off.

Sweeney finally reacts (sort of)

Variety asked Sweeney about the Bond chatter in a recent interview and noted it was the one moment she actually wobbled. She stalled for seven seconds, then ten, and said she honestly isn’t tracking every 007 rumor. She did call herself a longtime fan and said she’s curious to see where the franchise goes next.

"Depends on the script. I think I’d have more fun as James Bond."

Great answer. Also the correct one.

Where Bond 26 stands right now

  • Script: Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) is writing the new Bond movie.
  • Director: Denis Villeneuve is set to take the reins. Once he finishes Dune: Part Three, he’ll start the hunt for the next 007.
  • Bond casting: Names like Henry Cavill, Idris Elba, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson keep getting tossed around, but the word is Villeneuve wants an unknown British actor in his late 20s or early 30s. Personally, a fresh face sounds like the right call.
  • Villeneuve’s mission statement: He’s said he grew up on Bond (starting with Dr. No with his dad), loves the character, and treats the gig like sacred ground. He wants to honor the tradition while opening a lane for a lot of new missions. He called it a massive responsibility and thanked Amazon MGM Studios for the trust, adding that he and Amy and David are thrilled to bring Bond back. If you’re wondering who Amy and David are in that context, think the Amazon MGM leadership team.
  • Sweeney’s status: Bezos may want her in the movie, but Villeneuve has to sign off. Until then, it’s just talk.

Meanwhile, Sweeney has a real movie hitting theaters

Before any martinis or Aston Martins, Sweeney is starring in Christy, a sports biopic about boxer Christy Martin. It opens November 7. TIFF reaction was mixed on the awards chances, but critic Chris Bumbray came away convinced that, whatever you think of Sweeney, her talent is the real deal.

Could Sweeney make sense in the Bond world? Sure. But the most interesting part of this whole thing might be her saying she’d rather be Bond than Bond girl. Hard to argue with that.
