The apology needs to be as loud as the disrespect.

'I would never dream of courting Penelope Featherington, not in your wildest fantasies, Fife,' — these words, uttered by Colin in the final episode of Bridgerton Season 2 in front of the gentlemen of the ton, cut both Penelope and all her fans deeper than knives.

Not the ideal scene to start a great love affair, is it? But that might be just what a good dramatic storyline needs.

The highly anticipated Season 3 of the hit Shondaland series is set to be based on the love arc of Colin and Penelope, and in many ways, it's going to be a unique story for Bridgerton. Colin and Penelope are childhood friends and have both been part of the first two seasons, growing on viewers. More than that, they and their families have a complicated history.

Colin's public bad-mouthing of Penelope seems to have messed things up even more. But what if that was actually part of a winning formula? Don't get this wrong, fans who say Colin needs to 'suffer' for his words have a point, as his statement was public, loud, unwarranted, and potentially damaging to Pen's prospects.

With her secret Lady Whistledown gig, Pen is far from an angel herself, but her situation is far more fragile than that of any of the Bridgertons. The Featheringtons have been in turmoil for the first two seasons and are broke, and Penelope is rather shy in public and not exactly a popular bride among the ton's suitors.

So by saying what he did, Colin not only did his 'best friend' no favors, he actively hurt her chances of a good marriage. And it would only be fair if Colin had to grovel to Pen to make up for the pain he caused.

'I want him to be into her when she shows up with a glow-up only to realize she's icing him out. I'd love to see him be the one chasing after her and her entertaining other suitors,' a fan wrote on Reddit, echoing the sentiment of others.

This comment really shows why the bad-mouthing scene is so important to the plot of the upcoming Season 3. Penelope needs to break out of Colin's friend zone and realize that she's just as great as he is and deserves love, even if Colin is not ready to give it to her.

And having her finally do just that is the perfect setup for Season 3, which will hopefully air sometime in 2023.
