Netflix just dropped a teaser for The Beast in Me, a new mystery-thriller miniseries led by Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys. On paper it’s already spicy: all eight episodes hit on November 13, and the producers include Conan O'Brien and Jodie Foster. Yes, that pairing is unexpected. No, I’m not mad about it.

The setup

Danes plays Aggie Wiggs, a renowned author who’s retreated from the world after the death of her young son. She can’t write, she barely functions, and then the house next door gets a new owner: Nile Jarvis (Rhys), a powerful real estate mogul who used to be the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance. Aggie starts circling him as the subject of her return-to-writing project and gets pulled deeper than is remotely healthy.

"A game of cat and mouse that might turn deadly."

What the teaser actually shows

The footage leans into obsession and bad decisions. Aggie is drawn to Nile in that way where curiosity feels like oxygen. The trailer even nods to people having accused him of murdering his wife, while the official logline sticks to him being the prime suspect in her disappearance. Either way, the guy is radioactive. Still, Aggie moves from watching him to engaging with him, and the tease makes it clear they form a tense, unlikely partnership that blurs lines between research and danger. It’s the kind of neighborly relationship where you double-check your locks at night.

Who’s involved

There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes firepower here, plus a stacked supporting cast.

  • Leads: Claire Danes (Homeland) as Aggie Wiggs; Matthew Rhys (The Americans) as Nile Jarvis
  • Creator/writer/executive producer: Gabe Rotter
  • Showrunner/writer: Howard Gordon
  • Executive producers: Jodie Foster, Conan O'Brien, Claire Danes, Daniel Pearle, Jeff Ross, David Kissinger, Caroline Baron, Antonio Campos
  • Director: Antonio Campos
  • Also starring: Brittany Snow, Natalie Morales, Jonathan Banks, David Lyons, Tim Guinee, Hettienne Park, Deidre O'Connell, Aleyse Shannon, Will Brill, Kate Burton, Bill Irwin, Amir Arison, Julie Ann Emery

Fun note for Homeland fans: this reunites Danes with Howard Gordon, which is a promising sign for the tense, character-driven thriller side of things.

When and where

The Beast in Me premieres November 13 on Netflix, with all eight episodes available the same day. Between Danes returning to her thriller roots and Rhys doing the charming menace thing, this one has my attention.
