Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey will roll out a nearly six-minute IMAX prologue on December 12 ahead of Sinners and One Battle After Another, with the first trailer reportedly following the next week, per World of Reel.

Christopher Nolan is rolling out The Odyssey the way he loves to roll out big movies: with an IMAX appetizer, then a trailer. If you want the first real look, you might want to plan a couple December trips to the theater.

How to see it first

Per World of Reel, a nearly six-minute prologue for The Odyssey is set to play ahead of IMAX screenings of Sinners and One Battle After Another starting December 12. One week later, the full trailer is reportedly attached to Avatar: Fire and Ash screenings beginning December 19.

What the prologue shows

Empire Magazine already teased some of the footage. The prologue features Odysseus and the infamous Trojan horse being hauled up a beach toward the city by ropes and a lot of muscle. There are flashes of battle, and it all buttons with a shot of the Cyclops. Straight to the point, and yes, very big-canvas energy.

The movie

Matt Damon leads as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca and Trojan War hero trying to get back home to his wife after the war. On the way, he runs into a few well-known ancient headaches, including the Cyclops and the Sirens.

The film is written and directed by Christopher Nolan, adapting Homer’s epic. It’s Nolan’s first feature since 2023’s Oppenheimer, which won seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.

"The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology".

That’s Universal’s official line, and it tracks with the December IMAX-first rollout.

Cast

Also in the mix: John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Lupita Nyong'o, Mia Goth, Will Yun Lee, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Corey Hawkins, Josh Stewart, Jimmy Gonzales, Maurice Compte, Logan Marshall-Green, and more.

Release date

The Odyssey hits theaters on July 17, 2026.
