Christopher Nolan Saw This Romance Gem 3 Times: 'Just a Magical Experience'
And it's pretty easy to see why.
Is there a couple in 21st century cinema that broke hearts more than Mia and Sebastian? He lived for music and dreamed of owning a jazz club, she grew up watching classic movies and dreaming of an acting career.
The relationship between the two Los Angeles residents begins in the spirit of a Hollywood fairy tale: dancing in the hills, flying among the stars, walking on the set of iconic films. The perfect romance does not stand the test of reality: the ending of Damien Chazelle's creation is a nightmare for romantics around the world.
Christopher Nolan Has Seen La La Land Several Times
And one of the greatest directors of our time is, by all appearances, also a romantic. In one of the interviews, Christopher Nolan confessed his love for Damien Chazelle's musical La La Land. The director has seen it three or four times, even though he is not a fan of the genre:
"I went back to see that [La La Land] a couple of times. That basic joy of the possibility of a new movie and being there on opening night with a crowded audience – I don't think that ever changes. That's just a magical experience...Why did I go back? I think I almost went back to see if it was as good as I had thought, and it was, if that makes sense."
La La Land Is an Honest Tale of Love and Ambition
So what kind of story is Chazelle telling with the help of music, songs, witty dialogue and exceptionally charismatic, attention-grabbing stars? It is a relevant story about the conflict between love and ambition.
If, like Mia and Seb, you are trying to get to the top in an extremely competitive environment, you cannot compromise and give less than your all to leave something for your family and friends.
Sooner or later you have to answer the question: Which is more important – feelings or dreams? And no matter what you answer, you will have to live with that choice, remember it for the rest of your life, and wonder what would have happened if you had chosen a different path.
It's not a classic happy ending, but that's life, and Chazelle tells his story in an optimistic vein – not "everything will be fine," but "many things will be fine." And no one will ever take away the moments of happiness, love and friendship that these characters have experienced together.
