Christian Slater crowns Pump Up the Volume as the peak of his film career — not Heathers, not True Romance. Do you agree with his cult-classic pick?

Christian Slater just named his personal favorite from his own filmography, and yeah, it is the one where he hijacks the airwaves from his parents' basement and pokes the FCC with a stick. Pump Up the Volume still hits like a brick tossed through a guidance counselor's window, and Slater clearly feels the same way.

Where this came from

In a new chat with Rami Malek for Interview Magazine, Malek asked Slater which of his movies he loves most. Slater did not hesitate.

"I think it’s always been Pump Up the Volume. Again, I love everyone who’s involved, and I still love them all to this day. I feel like we made something very special together, and I remember being very happy on the set."

Why he keeps coming back to Mark Hunter

  • Deserted island pick: If he had to be stuck with one of his characters, he said he would pick Mark Hunter from Pump Up the Volume.
  • Vibes on set: He keeps calling out how happy he was making that movie and how much he loved the people involved.
  • Career moment: It was the very next thing he did after Heathers, and he appreciated the extra depth and vulnerability.
  • Shift from chaos: After playing a full-on madman in Heathers, it was a switch to a kid pushing back against the FCC and trying to expose injustice.

So where does this sit in the Slater-verse?

He has options. True Romance, Broken Arrow, all the 90s heat. On TV, Mr. Robot earned him the biggest awards love of his career, including a Golden Globe. But in his own mind, Pump Up the Volume is the one that never left.

If you want my two cents: I still put Clarence in True Romance at the top, but Mark Hunter is easily top three.
