Chris Hemsworth teases a game-changing turn for Thor in Avengers: Doomsday. The Russo Brothers’ MCU epic is in post and racing toward a December U.S. release, with Avengers: Secret Wars set for 2027.

Thor is leveling up again. Chris Hemsworth says the Asgardian walks into Avengers: Doomsday with more authority and, frankly, more mileage. With the Russos back behind the camera and the film deep in post, he offered a clear read on where the character lands after 15 years of pivots.

So where is Thor now?

Hemsworth traces a very bumpy, very Marvel journey. He credits Kenneth Branagh with the launchpad, calling those first couple films a detailed, collaborative start. After that, the baton kept getting passed. Some directors clicked with the character, some did not. By his recollection, even Joss Whedon admitted Thor gets tricky to write once he becomes that powerful.

The big reset came with Taika Waititi. Hemsworth says he had hit a wall with his own take, and that creative boredom sparked a new gear.

"I was kind of sick of what I'd been doing, and he was like, 'Yeah, so am I. Let's explore a different space.'"

Since then, he feels Thor has earned more presence, especially on a massive team movie. On the Doomsday set, surrounded by a wave of newcomers doing their first Avengers film, Hemsworth says he leaned into that seniority, both as an actor and as the character.

"Owning that a little more, he does feel like one of the elders. He's 2,000 years old or something, so we tried to play into that more than we had before."

That detail is promising. The MCU has played Thor as a swaggering goofball, a mythic warrior, a broken god, and a chill space Viking. An 'elder statesman' Thor with some bite could be the next interesting swing.

The road to Doomsday (and beyond)

  • Avengers: Doomsday is in post-production, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, and hits US theaters on December 18, 2026.
  • The follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, is set for December 17, 2027.

Bottom line: Hemsworth sounds energized, Thor sounds older and sharper, and the Russos are cooking. If Doomsday actually taps into that 'elder' energy, we might get a version of the character we have not really seen sustained on screen yet.
