Can Millie Bobby Brown Do What Daniel Radcliffe Did Post-Harry Potter?
Brown is ready to move on. But can she succeed?
We're all familiar with the stories of actors who become so closely associated with certain roles that they're forever typecast. Even more tragic are the tales of child actors whose careers get derailed because of the immense pressure they get put under.
Combine these two elements, and things get even worse. Nonetheless, some manage to break the curse, like Daniel Radcliffe. Now, Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown is expressing similar sentiments, suggesting that the mega-popular Netflix franchise might be holding her back. But could she replicate Radcliffe's success?
Stranger Things And Beyond
Millie Bobby Brown embarked on her acting career at the age of nine. However, it was her role as Eleven in the Duffer Brothers' series that marked her breakthrough. Brown portrays a lost child with supernatural powers, an escapee from a government facility, who has spent the past four seasons not only grappling with her horrific past but also learning to live, experiencing the highs and lows of adolescence.
However, the popularity of Stranger Things led to Brown being typecast as Eleven rather than being recognized as an actress capable of a full range of performances. It's only natural that she's begun talking about how she wants to move on.
'When you're ready, you're like, "All right, let's do this. Let's tackle this last senior year. Let's get out of here,"' Brown said. “Stranger Things takes up a lot of time to film and it's preventing me from creating stories that I'm passionate about. So I'm ready to say, "Thank you, and goodbye."'
Millie Bobby Brown vs Daniel Radcliffe
In addition to Stranger Things, Brown, now 19, has starred in big-budget feature films: two installments of MonsterVerse and the critically acclaimed Enola Holmes 1 and 2, where she also made her producing debut. These efforts to move beyond being typecast as Eleven are strikingly similar to the steps Daniel Radcliffe took during and after Harry Potter: in an attempt to avoid being forever known as a shy, bespectacled wizard, he ventured into West End and Broadway productions, as well as indie film and television projects.
Granted, Radcliffe may not be the biggest name in the industry, but he has managed to avoid getting stuck playing the same role in different projects by consistently demonstrating his acting prowess. He may have started at an earlier age, but we're confident that Millie Bobby Brown is just as talented and has even greater creative peaks to reach for post-Stranger Things.
