Horror icon Bruce Campbell has revealed a cancer diagnosis and faces months of treatment ahead, sharing the news directly with fans.

Bruce Campbell shared some tough personal news: he has cancer and is starting treatment. He is aiming to bounce back in time to take his new movie, Ernie & Emma, on the road this fall. And, selfish note, I would love to see him considered for the lead in the upcoming adaptation of Grady Hendrix's novella BadAsstronauts. Just putting that out into the cosmos.

The announcement

Campbell told fans on social media on March 3, 2026 that he is dealing with a form of cancer he describes as treatable. He kept specifics private but explained that treatment has to come first for a while. A couple of lines stood out:

'It is also called a type of cancer that is "treatable" not "curable".'

'Fear not, I am a tough old son-of-a-bitch and I have great support, so I expect to be around a while.'

In the near term, appearances and convention dates are being cleared so he can focus on getting as well as possible over the summer. The goal: hit the road in the fall with Ernie & Emma. He also made it clear he is not looking for sympathy or advice and wanted to get in front of any rumors.

Ernie & Emma

Written and directed by Campbell, the film follows widowed pear salesman Ernie Tyler as he travels to the spots where his late wife asked to have her ashes scattered. Each stop pulls him through memories of their marriage, his work life, and what comes next. Campbell plays Ernie.

He built the project to see if he could make a one-character-driven movie, shaped in part by his dad's years in Detroit advertising and the place he calls home now. He has said the story leans into long-married history — the baggage, the unresolved stuff — and lets the trip peel back good and bad revelations. It faces death head-on, with Emma very much a presence, and lets him play something age-appropriate for a change.

In a recent interview, Campbell put it this way:

'I am about ready to start telling adult stories. I am not really interested in teeny bop anymore. It just does not appeal to me. I can not relate to it. I think about dying. I think about death. I never really did before.'

Why this hits

Campbell has been a staple of genre film and TV for more than four decades, a guy who can swing from slapstick to sincere without breaking a sweat. Hearing that he is stepping back for treatment stings, but if anyone can turn a rough hand into momentum, it is him.

Career snapshot

  • Best known as Ash Williams in the Evil Dead franchise — the original film trilogy and a three-season TV run. He also co-owns the Evil Dead rights with Sam Raimi and producer Rob Tapert.
  • A familiar face across Raimi's movies, including the Spider-Man trilogy.
  • Standout roles and appearances across Burn Notice, Bubba Ho-Tep, Maniac Cop, Escape from L.A., The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess, My Name Is Bruce, Man with the Screaming Brain, The X-Files, and a lot more.

The road ahead

The plan is clear: treatment now, then a fall tour for Ernie & Emma if all goes to plan. He has already started canceling summer cons to clear the deck.

Here is hoping he gets the space to heal up and then roll into that tour. And yes, I am rooting for the day he blasts off in BadAsstronauts. Until then: all the best to the king. Cancer can take a hike.
