Searchlight has locked in late summer 2026 for Broken Lizard’s Super Troopers 3, putting the sequel on a box-office collision course with Will Gluck’s One Night Only.

Broken Lizard is getting the band back together. Searchlight just circled August 7, 2026 for Super Troopers 3, so yes, it is apparently time to dust off the Cat Game and grow those mustaches again.

The date, and who they are up against

That late-summer slot is not empty. On the same day, Will Gluck drops One Night Only, a high-concept rom-com that plays like a Purge riff: in a society where premarital sex is legal for one night a year, two strangers scramble to find someone to sleep with before the clock runs out. Also on the calendar that day: an untitled New Line movie. Translation: crowded weekend for adult-skewing comedies and date-night picks.

Who is back (and who is new)

  • Jay Chandrasekhar returns to direct and to play Thorny
  • Kevin Heffernan as Farva
  • Steve Lemme as Mac
  • Paul Soter as Foster
  • Erik Stolhanske as Rabbit
  • Brian Cox back as Captain John O'Hagan
  • Marisa Coughlan back as Ursula Hanson
  • Nat Faxon (The Descendants, Club Dread, Bad Teacher) joins as Captain Todd Markowski
  • Chace Crawford (The Boys, Gossip Girl, Reunion) as Baker Buchanan
  • Andrew Dismukes (The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy, Saturday Night Live, Call Me Brother) as Coy Burns

What the studio is saying

Searchlight has been in the Broken Lizard business for 20-plus years and is very publicly happy to keep the Super Troopers thing going. Their read on these movies: the nonsense always somehow feels inevitable, and they are ready to send this crew back out on patrol for more of it.

"Broken Lizard is excited to help bring the theatrical comedy back. To America, we say, 'It's mustache-growing time!'"

Quick franchise refresher

The original Super Troopers hit in 2001, following a group of prank-happy Vermont state troopers who try to save their jobs by beating the local cops to solving a case. It made $23.1 million worldwide and became a cult favorite. The 2018 sequel shifted the chaos to the U.S.-Canada border and did a bit better, grabbing $31.6 million worldwide.

Why this matters

Studios have been testing the waters for old-school theatrical comedies again, and Broken Lizard is a known quantity with a loyal audience. Slotting Super Troopers 3 against a buzzy high-concept rom-com and a mystery New Line release is a confident move. If you are the target demo for dumb-but-precise goofiness (and the occasional liter of cola), your August 2026 just got busy.
