Summary

  • Bridgerton fans had many reasons to be disappointed with Season 3.
  • Eloise and Cressida's friendship was the strangest storyline of the season.
  • Their final confrontation subtly mirrored the infamous Season 2 fight.

The second part of Season 3 of Bridgerton was released two weeks ago and caused as much excitement as it did frustration among fans. First of all, the strange dynamic between Pen and Colin, who didn't really seem to be the main characters of the season, was confusing to say the least, as they went from indifference to passion to almost hatred and finally to affection.

The Penelope, Eloise, and Cressida friendship triangle also played out rather strangely, with Eloise simply abandoning Cressida and rushing to Pen after Cressida publicly posed as Lady Whistledown.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of why Bridgerton fans are unhappy with Season 3. And indeed, the third season of the popular Netflix period drama has many shortcomings when it comes to plot. But it also turns out to be pretty good in ways you might not have expected.

The Controversy Surrounding Eloise & Cressida's Friendship

Throughout the first two seasons of Bridgerton, Eloise and Cressida couldn't seem to hate each other more. Cressida was a popular girl with the sharpest tongue in the Ton. Eloise was a misfit, a rebel who didn't want to fit in with her peers and conform to the norms of society.

Naturally, their differences led to some arguments between the two, as Cressida would put Eloise down behind her back, and Eloise would call out and scold Cressida in front of the whole Ton. But somehow, between Seasons 2 and 3, they became good friends and confidants to each other, helping each other to see the world from a different perspective and become better individuals.

Eloise and Cressida seemed to have a deep and genuine connection. And yet Eloise immediately left Cressida after the Lady Whistledown mishap, even though she knew the truth. It seemed like bad writing. And it probably was, but the falling out scene between the two girls was actually a very subtle nod to Season 2.

Unexpected Retribution

The reason Eloise and Penelope's falling out in Season 2 was so heartbreaking was because of the hurtful things they said to each other. Penelope called Eloise jealous of Lady Whistledown's success. And El angrily called Pen a wallflower no one would ever want to marry. Interestingly, these were the words Cressida had used earlier to gossip about Pen.

During Eloise and Cressida's fight in Season 3, Cressida called her only friend jealous of Lady Whistledown's accomplishments, adding that Eloise herself was all talk and no action. Ironically, those were Penelope's words from Season 2, which means that the three characters' stories have come full circle. It may be a small detail to notice, but it certainly shows how much effort the Bridgerton writers put into the series. After all, hearing those words again must have helped Eloise see her own mistakes in the conflict with Penelope.

Do you wish Eloise and Cressida had taken a different path?
