Despite being a light-hearted romantic show, Bridgerton has had some dark storylines, most notably that of Marina Thompson's scandalous pregnancy.

The storyline happened in Season 1, but viewers are still divided over it, especially now that Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton's season is coming up.

Marina was a distant relative of the Featheringtons, sent to them to enter society and find a suitable husband.

But it soon turned out that there was a problem: Marina was pregnant by her first love, George Crane, who had gone off to war.

Revealing her secret to everyone would ruin the Featheringtons' reputation, so Portia devised a plan to quickly marry Marina off to an ignorant bachelor who would not question the premature birth of a child. Unfortunately, Marina's choice fell on Colin Bridgerton, who was one of her potential suitors and soon became her fiancé.

Penelope, who'd been crushing on Colin for years, wasn't about to let him get caught up in the lies and used her secret identity as Lady Whistledown to expose Marina's pregnancy, causing a huge scandal and ruining her reputation forever.

Fortunately, George's brother, Philip Crane, offered to marry Marina, since it turned out that George had died on the battlefield.

This arc has not been taken lightly by Bridgerton fans. The majority of fans feel that Penelope was wrong to out Marina in front of the whole ton instead of telling the Bridgertons privately. But there is also an unpopular opinion that Penelope was right to do what she did.

Viewers who feel this way say that Penelope simply saved her longtime friend from betrayal and humiliation. Outing Marina publicly was the last option she had.

She had tried everything else. She tried to reason with Marina, even confessing that she was in love with Colin, but Marina dismissed her feelings. She talked to her mother. She even tried to talk to Colin, but it wouldn't help, since Pen knew he would go through with the wedding anyway. She needed a big scandal to stop the wedding. And Lady Whistledown's column seemed to be the only option.

Fans also note that Marina was no angel herself, she was extremely selfish in that situation. She forced Pen to keep her big secret and then tried to fraudulently marry a man Pen was in love with. Put yourself in Penelope's place. Would you act any differently than she did?
