Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen is heading back to Netflix with Calabasas, teaming with Kim Kardashian and Emma Roberts on a teen drama that follows a newcomer navigating the cutthroat world of an ultra-high-profile high school.

Netflix is heading to the Valley with a very shiny team. Chris Van Dusen, the guy who launched Bridgerton into a global binge, is taking over a new teen drama called 'Calabasas' — produced by Kim Kardashian and Emma Roberts. Yes, that Calabasas.

What 'Calabasas' is actually about

Based on Via Bleidner's memoir 'If You Lived Here You'd Be Famous By Now', the show follows Via, a 16-year-old from the Midwest whose family relocates to California. She lands at Calabasas High and gets dropped into a status-obsessed school ecosystem where every hallway feels like a spotlight. Expect a coming-of-age story that leans into the pressure cooker of that zip code — new rules, new friends, and the weird etiquette of being a nobody in a place built for somebodies.

The behind-the-scenes shuffle

Van Dusen is not just showrunning — he is also writing. He replaces 'Pretty Little Liars' creator I. Marlene King, who had been attached to the project for over a year before exiting. The series was first announced in 2024, and this change is a notable one given King's long run in the teen-drama space.

Who is making it

  • Showrunner/writer: Chris Van Dusen, also executive producing via CVD Productions
  • Producers: Kim Kardashian and Emma Roberts
  • Roberts' banner: Belletrist Productions, with Karah Preiss
  • Additional producers: Matt Matruski and Alexandra Milchan
  • Source material: Via Bleidner's memoir 'If You Lived Here You'd Be Famous By Now'
  • Book rights: Originally acquired by Alexandra Milchan's Crescent Line

Why Van Dusen matters here

Before this, Van Dusen developed and ran the first two seasons of Bridgerton — still one of Netflix's most-watched original dramas — so he knows how to build glossy, addictive television. 'Calabasas' also joins his growing Netflix slate alongside 'They Both Die at the End' (based on Adam Silvera's bestseller) and a TV take on Elle Kennedy's 'Girl Abroad'.

So when is it happening?

Netflix is keeping the rest under wraps for now. Casting hasn't been announced, and there is no production timeline yet. In other words, it's real — but it's early.
