Bridgerton Characters' 'Real' Age List: Just How Old Are Your Favourites?
Determining the precise ages of the Bridgerton siblings and their romantic partners is no easy feat, but it appears that nothing is beyond the capabilities of the dedicated Bridgerton fan base.
Ever since its debut, Bridgerton has taken the pop culture scene by storm, amassing an avid fan base eager to delve back into the romantic escapades of the Bridgerton family. Although the official release date for the third season hasn't been set yet, fans are contentedly re-watching the first two seasons and revisiting Julia Quinn's beloved romance novels the series is based on.
And as fans do all this re-watching and re-reading, one question keeps popping up more frequently than others: how old are the main characters?
The Netflix series and Quinn's novels are somewhat elusive on this topic, providing only vague references to characters' ages and birthdates. Additionally, there can be discrepancies between a character's age in the series and in the books. Thankfully, the fandom has plenty of dedicated individuals who have conducted a meticulous investigation to ascertain the ages of their favourite characters.
Reddit user u/Anonymouslurker26 compiled a comprehensive list of the known ages of the Bridgerton siblings and their significant others as of the 1814 social season (corresponding to Bridgerton's Season 2). The list is based on various comments and facts disclosed in the show:
-
Daphne Bridgerton : 20
-
Simon Basset: 29
-
Anthony Bridgerton: 29
-
Kate Sharma: 26
-
Colin Bridgerton: 21
-
Penelope Featherington: 19
-
Benedict Bridgerton: 26-28 (not specified in the show, 28 in the book series)
-
Eloise Bridgerton: 19
-
Francesca Bridgerton : mid-late teens (not specified in the show, 17 in the book series)
-
Gregory Bridgerton : 10-13 (not specified in the show, 13 in the book series)
-
Hyacinth Bridgerton : 10-11 (was born around the time Edmund Bridgerton died)
Women debutantes and those concluding their education are typically 18 in the show. Violet Bridgerton, however, had her older daughters postpone their debut by a year to complete their studies, which meant both Daphne and Eloise were 19 when presented to the Queen. On the other hand, Portia Featherington didn't grant Penelope an extra year, resulting in her debut in the first season.
The Shondaland writers adjusted the characters' ages from the original book series.
Daphne's age was reduced by two years, establishing her as the belle of the social season. Anthony and Simon, both peers, had their ages set back by a year. Kate's age was increased by five years to align more closely with Anthony's. Colin's age was decreased by two years, and Penelope and Eloise each aged by one year. Another reason for these adjustments was to reduce the age disparity within the couples.
Fans have lauded these alterations, arguing that they rectify the unsettling Regency-era trend of older men marrying significantly younger women. Ages that were not specified in the series, like those of Benedict and Francesca, might be revealed in their dedicated seasons. Any new romantic interests introduced in upcoming episodes will likely have their ages suitably adjusted to match their partners'.
