The only way comedy should make you cry is to cry with laughter.

Dark comedies in particular have nothing maudlin about them. Neither do crime dramas. But we all have a soft spot for something.

When Breaking Bad premiered in 2008, there was not a single character to feel sorry for. But as unlikely as it sounds, there was one particular moment that made one of BB's creators sob.

Vincent Gilligan, one of Breaking Bad's showrunners, admitted that he almost cried over the death of the show's main character.

Walter White used to be a chemistry teacher, but was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and decided to ditch the straight and narrow and cook meth. In five seasons, there seems to be no crime he hasn't committed, making him the most despicable character on the show.

Yet his inevitable death at the end of Breaking Bad made Gilligan sob. And the reason was not what you might think. The showrunner didn't mourn Walt - the villain deserved the outcome. It is the end of the story that Vince Gilligan had been working on for half a decade that brought tears to his eyes.

When asked about it several years after Breaking Bad ended, Gilligan said that Walt White's death hit him the hardest because it meant the end of the family that the cast and crew had become.

Despite being used to writing death scenes for the series, the showrunner said Walt's death was the hardest to put on paper. And it took some crying, too.

Indeed, the show brought together incredible talents. It's hard to believe now that there could have been no Breaking Bad, as it was rejected by many networks before AMC picked it up. One of the most successful and darkest shows on television was nearly nipped in the bud.

In this context, it is clear why it meant so much to Vince Gilligan. BB's creator nurtured the show and delivered it through and through. Putting it to sleep was definitely worth a few tears.
