Brad Pitt's F1: Plot, Release Date & Everything We Know About the Upcoming Movie

The main sports drama of the year is closer than you thought.
In June 2025, the sports drama F1, starring Brad Pitt, will be released. The movie was directed by Joseph Kosinski, director of Top Gun: Maverick and Only the Brave.
We tell you everything you need to know about the premiere, from the plot and actors to interesting facts about the filming.
F1 Release Date & Filming
The movie will be released in IMAX format on June 25, 2025, four days before the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix. After the theatrical release, the film will be available for streaming on Apple TV+, but there is no exact date for the digital premiere.
Filming began in 2023 and took place on real tracks, including rounds at Silverstone and the Hungaroring. The fictional APXGP team was given a garage and a pit stop, and the cars were placed at the back of the grid before the start of the race.
The writers had short breaks between practice and qualifying to film some of the material. In addition, the actors were often in the race cars themselves, having spent three months preparing for the races.
What Will F1 Be About?
The main character, Sonny Hayes, is a former Formula 1 driver who retired from the sport many years ago after a tragic incident on the track. Years later, he receives an unexpected call: to help a young and promising APXGP team, which occupies the last places in the championship.
Ambitious team owner Ruben decides that the veteran's return to the sport will not only give the young racers valuable experience, but will also be a PR bomb. He convinces Sonny to take the place of the second driver and become a mentor to a talented newcomer, Joshua "Noah" Pearce.
F1 Main Cast & Supporting Roles
Brad Pitt played the role of Sonny Hayes. He called filming the movie the best time of his life. In addition, the actor admitted that his 20 years of experience riding motorcycles helped him immensely in his preparation.
Hayes' partner, Joshua Pearce, was played by young British actor Damson Idris. This is his first major role, having previously appeared in the series Black Mirror and Snowfall.
Other famous actors will appear in the supporting roles. Oscar winner Javier Bardem played the owner of the APXGP team and an old friend of Sonny. The mechanic was played by Kerry Condon: in 2023 she was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Martin McDonagh's tragicomedy The Banshees of Inisherin.
