Boston Blue — CBS' new Blue Bloods spinoff — is officially underway, and one familiar face will look just a little unfamiliar.

Sean Reagan, youngest son of Donnie Wahlberg's Danny, has been recast for the new series. But before fans assume behind-the-scenes drama, producers are making it clear: this change is strictly creative.

Actor Mika Amonsen has been cast as a series regular, taking over the role from Andrew Terraciano, who played Sean across 14 seasons of Blue Bloods. According to production sources, the change comes as the character is being reshaped for a more central storyline — now a Boston PD patrolman following in the family's footsteps, but choosing to do it on his own terms and away from New York.

Quick recap:

  • Old Sean: Played by Andrew Terraciano, who appeared throughout Blue Bloods as Danny's high school-age son.
  • New Sean: Played by Mika Amonsen (Reacher, Thanksgiving), now a young Boston cop reconnecting with his father.

Why the recast?

No drama. No scheduling issues. According to the showrunners, this version of Sean is a more mature, independent take on the character. That meant reimagining the role — and recasting it.

Still, some fans aren't buying the explanation.

"Why isn't Andrew T reprising his role? Sorry but I'm just not feeling any interest in this show." — Kathy W

Others are taking a wait-and-see approach:

"As much as I love nearly all of the actors in this show, I have a gut feeling this thing is going to flop hard. I hope I'm wrong." — Mike F

The spinoff brings Donnie Wahlberg back as Danny Reagan, now working with the Boston PD, paired with Detective Lena Silver (played by Sonequa Martin-Green). Sean's move to Boston serves as both a personal and narrative bridge between the original series and its new setting.

Other confirmed cast:

  • Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver
  • Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver
  • Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver
  • Ernie Hudson as Reverend Peters

The series is produced by CBS Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Television, with Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis as showrunners. Wahlberg, Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed, and the showrunners all serve as executive producers.

Production began this week for a fall premiere, airing Fridays at 10 p.m. — the same slot once held by Blue Bloods. As of now, Sean is the only other Reagan besides Danny confirmed for Boston Blue, but more guest appearances from the Reagan family are expected.
