‘Oh, no problem’—the offhand remark that lit the fuse, sparking outrage over complacency and a scramble to confront the consequences.

If your Borderlands 4 session on PS5 Pro starts smooth and slowly turns into a slideshow, you are not imagining it. The game just launched and there is a known performance drop that kicks in after long play sessions. The current fix is not glamorous, but it works.

PS5 Pro performance keeps sliding the longer you play

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford says the team is aware of a performance issue on PS5 Pro that shows up after several hours of continuous play. Players have been posting clips that back this up — frame rate starts strong, then nosedives the deeper you get into a session.

"Quit game and restart."

That is Pitchford’s recommended workaround right now, and he calls it the best option "until we patch." He also apologized for the friction. It is very much a classic looter-shooter problem: great pace, then the engine gets grumpy if you marathon it.

What the devs think is going on

Creative director Graeme Timmins says the team is investigating what many players assume is a memory leak. He adds they think they have a lead, but there is nothing the studio can confirm yet. When a player asked if the team is aware of a memory leak that is forcing hourly restarts, Timmins reiterated they have already acknowledged the investigation and are actively working on it — just no details to share yet.

  • Issue: Performance on PS5 Pro degrades after several hours of continuous play
  • Workaround: Fully close the game and relaunch it until a patch arrives
  • Status: Gearbox is investigating; suspected memory leak, not confirmed
  • Player reports: Lots of videos showing frame rate drops after long sessions
  • Tone from Gearbox: Apologetic, but asking for patience while they lock it down

PC players are frustrated too, and Gearbox has thoughts

Borderlands 4 is not exactly cruising on every platform. Pitchford pushed back a bit on the PC side, pointing out that many complaints are coming from folks trying to run the game at 4K with ultra settings on two- or three-year-old hardware. His gist: we all target different settings, and if you want perfection at 4K ultra on older gear, you are going to have a rough time. He also tossed in a very Randy note that the game will likely be cheaper in a couple of years — which is... not untrue, just a little spicy to hear at launch.

PSA: there is also a progress-loss bug

One more thing to keep on your radar: some players report losing skill points after crashes or getting disconnected in multiplayer. Gearbox says they are looking into this as well. If you are grinding skill points, maybe play it safe and back out to the menu once in a while until a fix lands.

Bottom line: if your PS5 Pro performance tanks mid-marathon, restart the game for now. Gearbox is on it, and when a patch drops, I will update you.
