Blue Bloods Star Andrew Terraciano Breaks Silence on Spinoff Recast
Blue Bloods favorite Andrew Terraciano breaks his silence on being recast for spinoff Boston Blue, throwing his support behind Mika Amonsen as the new Sean Reagan.
Blue Bloods fans, here we go: the spinoff Boston Blue recast Sean Reagan, and the guy who played him for basically the entire life of the flagship series just weighed in. Andrew Terraciano talked about handing the role off to newcomer Mika Amonsen, and honestly, he could not be more gracious about it.
Andrew Terraciano is cool with the handoff
Terraciano, who was Sean from 2010 through 2024 (we’re talking nearly 300 episodes), says he’s proud of the years he put into the character and equally open to someone else taking the baton. He told US Weekly he’s still got every memory of the role locked in, but that doesn’t mean the door shouldn’t open for a fresh take.
"It doesn’t mean for even a second that somebody else can’t go and do something beautiful with it."
He found out about the recast on his graduation day, which is a very TV-biz way to cap off a milestone. Not long after, Donnie Wahlberg called him, which he described as a genuinely warm catch-up with an old friend. He hasn’t watched Boston Blue yet, but says he’s going to give the show time and respect before diving in — and yes, if Wahlberg asked, he’d show up.
Mika Amonsen steps in as Sean
Amonsen makes his debut in the Boston Blue premiere, where Sean is starting out as a Boston cop. Amonsen has said he wants to honor what Terraciano built, and Terraciano appreciates that — he can see the affection for the character and the nods to the past without anyone trying to carbon-copy his version.
Why the recast happened
Co-creators Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis told TV Insider they wanted a slightly different flavor of Sean for this series. In the pilot, Sean’s made some major life moves — joining the police force and leaning into the Reagan calling — and they wanted the story to start mid-stride, with Sean already stepping into that new chapter.
- 2010–2024: Andrew Terraciano plays Sean Reagan on Blue Bloods (nearly 300 episodes)
- Graduation day: Terraciano learns Boston Blue will recast Sean
- Post-graduation: Donnie Wahlberg calls; Terraciano describes it as a meaningful check-in
- Boston Blue premiere: Mika Amonsen debuts as Sean, now a Boston police officer
- Where to watch: Boston Blue airs Fridays at 10/9c on CBS
Recasting a Reagan is a swing, but Terraciano’s attitude makes it a lot easier for fans to roll with. He got to define Sean for more than a decade; now he’s sending the character off to do something new, and he’s rooting for the next guy to make it sing.
