Blue and Grey or All Black? DCU Fans Deliver the Verdict on Batman’s Next Suit
James Gunn’s comments on Batsuit styles have set social media ablaze, with DCU fans rallying for a blue and gray Batman. With The Brave and the Bold still in development, the cape and cowl are already the reboot’s fiercest battleground.
Batman suit discourse is back on the menu. James Gunn weighed in on what fans are asking for with the DCU reboot, and naturally the internet did what it does best: instantly argue about color palettes and eye lenses like the fate of Gotham depends on it.
What Gunn actually said
After someone asked him on social media if the most requested detail for the new Batsuit was the white eyes, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn clarified the pecking order. This kicked off a fresh wave of reactions on X (formerly Twitter) on December 1–2, 2025.
'The most requested thing for the new DCU Batman is the blue and grey. Then the yellow around the bat, and then the white eyes. But all of those things I find less important than the character himself, the writing, and the person who plays him.'
The fan wish list (and the pushback)
If you want a snapshot of where the fandom is at: a lot of people are done with the all-black tactical armor look and want the classic comic colors back. The blue-and-grey suit came up over and over, with folks arguing that it can absolutely work in live action right now. Others asked for the yellow oval around the chest emblem and pitched a practical approach to the white eyes, citing Mister Terrific-style lenses or the Arkham games as the blueprint. There were goofier takes too (someone joked about just casting the State Farm Batman and going full bold blue/navy), and a few people pointed out we already saw versions of these ideas pop up in the DCEU, so bring it on for the DCU.
- Most requested by fans, per Gunn: blue and grey suit
- Runner-up: a yellow oval around the bat emblem
- Third: white eyes
Gunn has said he is open to these elements, but nothing is locked yet. Which, yes, is exactly how development usually works, even if it makes the discourse spin up every time he replies to a comment.
Where this Batman is headed
The first DCU Batman shows up in The Brave and the Bold, which is still in development. The hook this time is Damian Wayne. Gunn has described it as the story of Batman's actual son, raised as a little murderer and assassin, and called Damian his favorite Robin. Peter Safran has also confirmed other members of the Bat-family will be part of the film.
So, will we get the blue-and-grey with a yellow oval and white eyes? Could be. But based on Gunn's priorities, expect the final call to come down to what best serves the character, the script, and the actor under the cowl. Personally, I get the appeal of the OG palette. Just make the movie sing, and the suit will look great no matter the shade of blue.
