With the upcoming season around the corner, theories are going around about what's next for the second eldest brother of the Bridgerton family - and it's not looking good.

As season 3 of Bridgerton is steadily approaching, fans are eagerly anticipating the new storylines that await their favorite characters. We already know the season's leading couple will be Penelope and Colin, Kate and Anthony will enjoy the newlywed life, and Eloise's conflict with Penelope will surely provide some drama.

But amidst all the excitement, there's one burning question on everyone's mind: What's awaiting Benedict in this upcoming installment? Well, it appears that things are not looking good for him.

Benedict Bridgerton, the second eldest of the Bridgerton siblings, is adored for his creative, romantic, and sensitive nature. In the original Bridgerton novels, Benedict is the male lead in An Offer from a Gentleman, the third volume of the series. In the book, he falls for Sophie Beckett, a mysterious woman he encounters at a masked ball. Sophie, the illegitimate daughter of an Earl, becomes a servant for her stepmother and stepsisters after his death, much like a true Cinderella. Naturally, everyone expected season 3 to revolve around Benedict's romantic journey with Sophie. However, the showrunners had other plans.

So, what do we know about Benedict's storyline in season 3 so far? While he may not be the season's leading man, fans can rest assured that he'll have a significant part to play.

Showrunner Jess Brownell revealed in an interview with Variety that the series differs from the books in terms of focus. While the books primarily concentrate on one romantic pairing at a time, the show takes a more ensemble approach, giving each character a substantial role. Brownell reassured fans, stating, 'Benedict, who is book three, will be a vital part of Season 3.'

However, Benedict's story may not be as rosy as we've been anticipating. Observant viewers have picked up on a subtle hint that suggests he may be in for a great deal of suffering. In the final episode of season 2, Benedict and Eloise share a sweet moment on the swings. During their conversation, Eloise asks Benedict what he would know about heartbreak, to which he responds, 'I would not, really.'

On the surface, it may seem like a simple exchange, but fans theorize the way he said it sounds like he's almost begging for heartbreak.

That single line is like a neon sign pointing toward Benedict's upcoming turmoil. It's as if the writers wanted to signal to the fans that he's about to be put through the wringer. While heartbreak can come in various forms, whether it's related to love, family, or his artistic pursuits, Benedict seems destined to face significant challenges in season 3.
